Ok I turned off access to it from the Set Programs and Defaults link.

Also tools/manage add-ons allows you to turn it off as well.

I used to just rename the Messenger folder to Messenger Disabled in order to keep the program but force it not to run with OE but SP2 seems to not care and now it's back running with OR every single time.

How can I get it not to run with OE without either deleting it or completely removing access to it. Telling it to to log on in OE and not to run in background/with Windows in Messenger has no affect. The only thing I can do to get it not to run is to deny complete access to it through program access and defaults.

Is a regedit the only way to get it to allow me not to run it with OE without deleting it? How hard can it be for their programmers to give the user the option, a few minutes worth of programming?

So the regedit is the only way again to stop it from running with OE?

No wonder everyone hates MS when something that should be so simple to allow the user to choose what they want through actual program settings can't be done. What would it take them, all of five minutes to add that option?

I liked the renaming the folder better but regedit it is I guess. If anyone knows of a way other than regedit I would still be intersted in that but the regedit key works for now.

Thanks.

everyone says this but i must just be lucky cos all i did was went to the options/tools section of win messenger and unclicked loading on startup then unclicked the relevant entries on OE and it doesnt load, OE starts very quickly and i dont get the icon in the taskbar even.

i think maybe i better reverse engineer how i did it so that i dont have the problems when i reinstall!

i have no idea, i don't use OE, but i removed messenger that way. it's not a big deal to do what they suggest, or just switch to thunderbird.

That's odd that that works for some. I guess their programming really does stink.

Use administrative tools -> services -> Messenger -> properties -> disable service. Boom, done.

I've tried that before and believe that is for the Windows Messenger Service and isn't related to the Windows Messenger chat program.

What doesn't MS simply just call their OS-integrated IM client "Jason", since it's apparent that no matter how many times a user kills it, it finds a way to rise from the dead??? Do you think that New Line would get too annoyed?
