i just downloaded service pak 2 and when i was restarting i noticed my boot time was so much longer, plus it says that my virus scan is not working but it actually is. What im asking is
1- does service pack 2 slow down your computer boot speeds too?
2- is it realy worth having SP2 or should i just uninstall it?
thanks inadvance fellows

Have you rebooted a couple of times since installing it? That first boot is always longer.

sp2 is worth it. If you're a geek you shouldn't be booting more than 3-4 times/year anyhow, right?

Get over it.....boot speeds mean nothing about computer performance anyway!!!

As long as the gaming performance is the same or better then don't lose any sleep over it!!!

SP2 shouldn't really be necessary as long as you keep up with the individual critical updates from windowsupdate.microsoft.com

Also, a software firewall uses your CPU power to examine packets to see if they should be allowed or not, I know from past experience that Sygate personal firewall could slow the system down some, I'd expect the same out of any software firewall including the one included in SP2.

SP2 is far more than just a few fixes rolled into a single package. It includes changes at the very core of the OS that won't be included in other hotfixes. These include changes to RPC, DCOM, memory management, and it also includes support for the no execute bit.

To help out the OP. The first reboot is slow because it is still making changes on the first boot up. I haven't noticed a big difference in boot time with SP2. ALthough I've only booted maybe twice since then.

I've noted a difference with SP2. HD access is real slow. I'm getting the feeling that Norton Anti-virus and t he new security features in SP2 are conflicting. I use Powerdesk and if I delete a few files, it can be several minutes before I have file access again thru powerdesk. [Tried Explorer Plus with same result]. I've noticed similar but not as severe slowdowns in other programs where you need to select files.

What type of files are these? Or are they all different kinds? The new security features don't have much to do with accessing files. Have you looked for a update to PowerDesk since SP2? What about normal Explorer? Do you you still have the same problem?

I've tried Powerdesk 5 and 6(brand new) and Exploer Plus. Similar thing happens with regular Windows explorer. PD is the worst, E+ a little better. Type of file makes no differences. If I delete a group of files, it sits for a while, deletes files and than hangs for awhile, 15 seconds to 3 or 4 minutes. I can switch to another program which will operate as long as I'm not doing a file access. The system seems to be waiting for something. I was thinking a virus check, but why on a delete command

Why not troubleshoot a little? Try uninstalling the virus checker and trying things, try shutting off DEP (which does do software things even if you don't have the CPU for the hardware portion), try disabling file indexing, run a defrag, do a scandisk, etc.. You can always undo (or switch av companies, etc) once it pans out.
