So I have a 1tb ssd and I am down to 64gb of space now and while I cold try like in the past store some games not being currently used to another hd I prefer to keep what I have and add another 1tb of space.

The first problem the cabal has kept the 1tb sdd prices too high for my budget at this moment at prices going from $250 on up and ultimately I like to add a minimal of 1-2 tb of added space.

So what a good way to go forward and I know the OS best place to the SSD files but how different will games play on a regular hd these days?

Also I thought there is a way to append the drive to just have added space to have 2 drives using same drive letter?

Posting now for feedback and comments Thanks!

I would buy a regular SATA hard disk like a WD blue or black. Run all your games off it. You really won't notice a difference, but to be sure, what games do you play the most?

Well I used to only use WD drives but these days I prefer Seagate drives.
I mostly play WoW, and other MMORPG and now some shooters like Destiny 2 and DOOM and how can I append the drive letter to the new drive to continue using 1 drive letter and does that mean I could move some of my big games to the added drive with no problems?

I like to free up some space on my SSD to run some of my old VM to run some Win 7-8 and Apple OS again.

Get the Zip compressor program and zip up and compress those games you are not using. You can probably save 50 percent in space doing that. There might be programs out there that compress files even more than that.

All my drives use Windows built in compression and I mainly rar these days mostly using Winzip and 7 zip for everything.

I prefer Seagate drives.
Seagate is a gate to the sea that leads to fail!

HGST is my perfered brand and also the preferred brand of many people on this forum who demands reliability and performance.

We need to know what board your running..
How many sata ports you have.

You get a controller card only if you ran out of sata ports or if you want that extra speed.
However a sas controller which is on par to Sata 6G on modern boards will cost you dearly.

I would put open world games, mmo's like WoW on the ssd for the far faster load times. When I swapped over on my gaming machine 3-4 years ago the difference was about 30-45s load time in WoW, especially if in a city. Though for some games you won't notice a huge difference. Steam also now lets you move games between drives if you want to keep a game installed but need space for a new one on the ssd.

https://upx.github.io/ offers better compression than that for binaries only. But you should be able to use it on all your exe and dll files. Unless Windows restores them from backups.

FYI I use ATI for daily backups of my Windows OS which at one time all my games reside in my games folder to make easy tracking how much data the games are consuming so and one way to make room was to move games I was not playing to my backup folder on 1 of my 5tb hard drives but I just reverted back and uninstalled some games not using right now like guild wars 2 and EQ2 and rift but I prefer to have left them installed in case I wanted to easily revisit a game.

Now I just made a dupe of my SSD to my hard drive to I used for OS building https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822178996

I am trying this post on that new drive now and I know if wont be nearly as fast my SSD now have 1tb of free space.

I would be able to move my 300gb Battlenet and Steam games to make room on my SSD is the easiest option for that kind space clearing.

Let me see how my new setup is working I know I be playing a lot of WoW, Destiny 2, and finish DOOM campaign as well as new Syberia 3.

Symbolic Link?

I've done that quite a few times. Cut/Paste a software installation to an entirely different drive and symbolic link to it so that that software still functions. It just won't be running from the same SSD.

Just buy a giant HDD and use SteamMover. Basically you put all your games onto the HDD, then one-click move the current / regulary played games onto the SSD. When you're done, one-click it back to the HDD. It basically automates all the junction / symbolic links between the two.
