Single space is proper for all forms of type, but I voted double space because I like it better

this. one is just lazy and bullshit to the eyes. two spaces is much easier to read and understand. however, one is correct. i still do two, regardless.

Edit: haha. the forum software automatically defaults to a single space when two are entered.

This a serious post?

One or two spaces after ending a sentence?

I can understand debating double vs. single spacing lines of text, but debating the white space after a '.'? I probably wouldn't even notice the difference; it would not make a difference to how I read it.

Erm.. good luck explaining how you prefer something to a professor.

If I had to explain my spacing after a period to any of my professors in college, they probably would have told me to go study industrial press machines or something.

Seriously, at least half of the kids with me when I went to college had a hard time spelling... you are telling me your professors dock points if you use one space or two after a period? If so, I'd find another college, unless your college has all non-spell check users with perfect grammar and sentence structure (ie. ImpossibleLand).

Then why does HTML automatically remove them? See for yourself: Highlight the text from your own posts.

Two spaces is only for monospaced type, as oxymoronic as that sounds.

No. WAY off. HTML is what is doing that. Your needless spaces are useless almost anywhere online and the unnoticed lack of extra spaces disproves anyone making the "for readability" argument. You can probably use a space with a non-breaking space if you really want to, but I'm not about to test that without a numpad (ALT+0160).

If half of the "kids" you went to college with had a hard time spelling, maybe you're the one who should have sought another institution of higher learning.

Expecting perfection is ridiculous. Not correcting mistakes because it seems like nit picking? Probably the reason half of your classmates had trouble spelling in the first place.

Always two (in the legal world). One spaced typing in legal memos/motions/etc. is high up on my pet peeves list.

Two is correct formal usage. This started changing about 15 years ago... There is an evolution to one (this is often justified with texting, etc...). You can generally assume that people who "know" that single space is correct are under 40 years old.
