I was taught double space, but as far as I know, the guideline today is single. I, however, like Mr. Jeeebus Esq. will continue to use two.

i'm 37, was taught two spaces but that's changed now it seems. the more correct option now is one space after a period. i find it better now anyway.

I had to grammar nazi some stuff I was checking that was customer facing. It is a major pain counting spaces after sentences but every single occurrence had to get reported.

chicago manual of style says one space.

good reference point. looking up the other biggie for grammar style, the MLA, this is what they have to say:

"Publications in the United States today usually have the same spacing after a punctuation mark as between words on the same line. Since word processors make available the same fonts used by typesetters for printed works, many writers, influenced by the look of typeset publications, now leave only one space after a concluding punctuation mark. so either is ok, but they are already choosing to use single space as the primary example and it is trending as the standard style and will only continue to grow.

soon enough, single space will be the de facto standard.

5 years of graphic design school told me that single space is correct. Interestingly enough that is the only useful thing I learned as an art major.

Sorry, i didn't read responses. My mom always told me two spaces after a period. I've always done that and have never had any complaints from professors. In order to lengthen papers and such, that could end up coming quite in handy as long as your prof. doesn't care. Just sayin'

grammar is not equivalent to science where there are things like hard facts of nature to indicate what is 'correct'.

language changes, there can never be a hardline 'correct', only a customary or 'recommended for the current time period'.
