What if we eventually find out there is Stuxnet-level sabotage?

Probably not though...

Holy shit, that thing just disintegrated. I love how the broadcasters just went silent for ~25 seconds like "uhhhhhhhhhhhhh, uh oh." We obviously need to revisit the procedures that are in place for launching a spacecraft. They clearly aren't working.

oddds on them losing their NASA contract? isn't this like the third failed mission in a row?

I don't believe so. They've tried to land a rocket vertically on a barge that's failed a few times, but that was a long shot anyways and the missions themselves were a success.

That's really going to start putting a damper in the future space cruise ship bookings I imagine.

Yeah. Incorrect assumptions by the public hurt the reputation of SpaceX. I'm wondering if they should continue publicizing those booster recovery attempts...

Yup, looks like a tank or structural failure.

Shit

Orbital blew up last October
Progress spun out of control in April
Now SpaceX blows up.

Resupply not a problem yet but it's going to get there if we don't start hitting more than 1 resupply in a row. (My opinion- not speaking for my employer)

I really winced when I saw it happen, watching live. SpaceX is my leading employer prospect when my enlistment is up and I hate to see anything negative happen to them. However, this is space flight and it's a dangerous game. I immediately thought of a Boeing rep who said to Koenigsman about the docking adapter "Take good care of it" and was like "way to jinx it, pal."

Looking at the video, it does look like an upper stage failure. Although, something about the flight from the start looked odd to me. It seemed like a slow lift off from the pad. That doesn't support the upper stage failure theory, but it was worth noting and I've seen where others noticed it too. Normally Falcon 9's take off with some decent gusto.

If you are a rocket scientist, that probably increased your odds of getting hired.

There should be a simple thread titled "SpaceX rocket explodes____________" so each
time it occurs you just update the specifics.

What sucks too is all the cargo that is lost, scientific experiments or what not. Stuff that probably took years to develop. But I guess for every failure, there is something to learn. I can't begin to imagine how they will investigate this, it's just completely destroyed and what's left is probably spread over several miles. They probably knew ahead of time something was wrong though due to various alarms that they probably got, so that can give them a lead. I'd imagine they monitor quite a lot of alarm points on these.

As for the silence that was probably the guy rage quitting throwing his headset down.

I too thought it took off more slowly than other launches. I just chalked it up as the position of the cameras.

This is harrowing news. I worked on a payload that was rushed to go up in SpaceX 6 instead of later. It is just now starting operations on the ISS. It could have been on this launch instead.

When Orb-3 blew up there was a big ripple effect causing a lot of things to get delayed and pushed onto SpaceX instead. This is only going to make things worse. And it's probably going to cause more anxiety over SpaceX's manned vehicle in development.

You're probably counting most of the booster recovery attempts as mission failures.

I don't suppose any organization is investigating something like SpaceShipOne's approach: Use a jet to lift the rocket through the thickest part of the atmosphere, and then rocket into space. My understanding is that our current method is not terribly efficient with regards to fuel requirement, as the thing needs to ascend without the lifting assistance of all this handy air that's available; rather, it has to ascend against the air's resistance.
(It wouldn't necessarily solve this particular problem, but it sounds like it'd be generally beneficial.)

granted losing the payload sucks since these were mostly student projects from what I read. There has to be room for failure. I bet they learn more from this than if it was a big success. It was unmanned and was testing many upgrades to many systems.

Failure is the fastest path to success when it comes to technology.

Thanks, it's a patch that was sewn on F8 pilots in the Vietnam war, the incoming F4's were technically superior to the F8's they replaced but they lacked a gun and depended solely on unreliable missiles in plane/vs plane combat.

It is a private corporation just as an aside.

I'm not sure "our" is involved.

Yes, I know.

"Our" in this case refers to humanity: "Our" spaceflight, with very few exceptions, has been accomplished by using rocket propulsion.
