On my old landline I decided to try something different to stop spam calls and random collection agencies calling for someone I had no clue about. I hooked up my old PII 300 machine from 2003 and connected my phone line into the modem. I set the modem to answer the phone after 5 rings, that way I could screen who was calling. Let me say that this worked wonders. After 2 weeks I would get maybe 1 call a week instead of 20. Screaming modem sure stops live calls and robocalls probably think they hit a fax machine.

I wonder if something like that could be done for cell phones?

Whats the purpose of thise apps when android can naitively reject calls on the list?

Long press the number in call log then add to reject list. I never hear from them again

I never get called by the same number twice. It's always a new spam number.

Yeah, that's the bad thing. I add the spam number to my Ignore list but the same number is rarely used twice (though it happens). I actually haven't gotten any spam calls on my phone recently. Not too long ago it was one every day, nearly.

If they are able to spoof numbers using voip, what's the point in blocking a number then?

Nomorobo must be doing a great job. I get many single rings in a day because it was blocked. These most likely are all political calls.

I got a text from an unknown number asking if I had lost a cell phone. Checked with my family and all of us had ours. I then got into a "discussion" with this person about if I had called the lost cell phone or not. I said I had not and they insisted I had. The person then showed me the call log from the lost cell phone and sure enough my number was on there. Some spammer had spoofed my phone number.

I wrote a blog entry about phishing with a number spoof. The shit you can do when someone thinks you are something you're not with a spoofed phone number. One trick is getting into voicemail. Always password protect it!

4 robo calls this morning. 2 from numbers I already blocked with the phone and 2 new ones. the verizon blocked call feature will stop the call ringing the phone, but still lets them leave a voicemail.

get em all the time now, very annoying. the number is always different, blocking doesn't help. sometimes it's even an international number. they do give an option to be added to their do not call list but it doesn't seem to do anything.

still not as bad when I was somehow added to a list seeking quotes from movers and I was getting 20+ calls a day for a few days...

Just realized even on my land line I barely get any telemarketers now. In fact the wost offender is my credit card company they keep trying to sell me balance protection. I said yes once just to shut them up and called back later to cancel. Figured it would make the calls stop and they started again. But I got mad at them the other time and told them to stop calling me about that. They try to make you feel guilty like what if you die now your family is stuck paying your credit card etc. I don't tend to carry a big balance anyway.

As for cell I don't get any either, which is surprising given how smartphones leak all your info such as your number.
