Spam problem

The spam threads are getting out of control, there must have been a dozen I've reported on today.

Could we do something about it? Maybe ban new accounts from making new threads until they have 50 posts, or something?

Not a whole lot we can do. We try to ban them as fast as we can but please keep reporting them, much appreciated.
I've been on other forums with restrictions on new accounts, that e.g. put your threads in moderator review before putting them live. Does Anandtech software not support any of those features?

On popular sites, that can quickly become overwhelming or at least fatiguing for mods, to have to be constantly checking a queue of new account posts to approve them, but I don't know the rate of new account posts per day here, but I'd guess it's quite a few if there is a lot of spam through multiple accounts instead of same account.

I've gotten the impression that the AT forums don't get much if any developer time to fix or improve the site, so any changes might just be wishful thinking, but to me it seems like an opposite strategy might work as well as mod review of new account posts - Instead, set it up so that if a post gets, let's say at least 2 or 3 reports of being spam, THEN the post is automatically removed to a review queue for mods to restore back if not spam, with it an automated one-click restore function.

That's more passive for the mods, and any spam irritating to forum members, you could expect them to report it at a quick enough rate that it's not irritating too many people, since anyone irritated, should be reporting it.

If it's bots doing it, then a more challenging signup than just standard Xenforo might help, but IDK what the signup is even like now, having signed up only so long ago.

There has been a bit of a spam tsunami recently! Those guys are tenacious!
I always wonder if deputising a bunch of the more sensible forum members to be able to deal with spam threads might help. Probably not though as they are probably automated and whoever/whatever posts them probably never checks to see if they stay up.

Cheers for dealing with it though mod people!

The powers that be have done some tweaking that so far has eliminated a great deal of the spam. Today I saw zero Temu spammers! Big sigh of relief.
But now where will I find my CBD gummies and Temu vouchers?!

Thanks for looking into this, Powers That Be, the forum feels a lot more usable today

Yes I have been sitting at the keyboard for the last 90 minutes getting rid of these assholes.
Literally had 90 spammers in the past 90 minutes.

It's past my damn bedtime.

More than 150 today and they're not stopping.
I've asked admin for help again like we asked for with all the temu spammers last week.

Does reporting help? I'm never sure if I'm being helpful or annoying when I do it!

Yes it does.
Any moderator that logged on can see reported posts and hopefully they are removing them.
Problem is they strike at 10-11 pm PST and go for about 3-4 hours. Not as many mods on duty as during the day. Yes I generally have that late evening time covered .
There were over 100 spammers in around 2 hours last night.

Maybe more mods should be deputized.

Maybe just a spam mod category if possible just to delete garbage low effort spam posts without getting involved in other content moderation.

Exactly. There are lots of seniors on this forum who could help, but I don't trust a lot of them to not inject their bias into political/etc post *disopinions* when it comes to full moderator control over posts by non-spammers.

It comes down to discipline. On a certain popular site, I am the senior admin, who calls the shots, and can do anything I want, but I don't mess with the duties of others, until something goes wrong. It is important for everyone to understand their place, including myself.

My point is that you deputize someone, and it's a liability, till you see what comes out of it, but in this case, doing it on a limited scale might be more good than harm.

I still think there might be other ways to harden the signup so that isn't necessary but not being hands on this, IDK.
