Spaning FS over two drives

on my freebsd 4.5-RELEASE i installed with one 20g hard drive, when i installed i made a 10g /home/music partition to hold all my music (duh), so now ive added another 20gig hard drive (both ide) what i want to do, and cant find any sort of documentation for some reason, is just expand my 9g partition to cover the entire other drive as well, ive been able to add the other drive and give it its own partition, but like i said thats not what im lookin to do. Any links or first hand exp. would be welcome. thanks in advance.

im no linux guru, but couldn't you create a folder on your 9gb partition and have the mount point go to the new 20gb drive? just a thought....

I guess no one knows anything about unix... the problem i have with your soloution n4s is that for my purpose, having a 9gig directory inside a directoy dosnt make a whole lot of sence.

that would work, but in my case being able to span accross would be the best solution

i know almost nothing about linux, but i dont think what you are wanting to do is possible -- thats what a raid card is for.

heh. obviously not. free bsd != linux.

You can use the ccd driver for software RAID in FreeBSD, I don't think you can expand the current fs onto the new partition though so you'll probably have to backup the data, create the pseudo-device with ccd, newfs it, mount it and restore.

Seeing how this was rather technical and a problem i needed suport for.... i dont think i need to finish my statement.


Nothinman: Thank you, I've found the section of the handbook regarding ccd, and this is the route ive been looking for. It just so happens that the drives ARE identical, and since i still have 9g free i have plenty of time to find a third small drive for my / /etc /var and /home directories =)

i cant believe i said that... while i was reading the thread and came across Need4Speed's post, I thought to myself "that guy thinks we are talking about linux." then i go and do it myself. i feel kinda stupid

yeah, i almost did the same thing but i reread the thread and caught myself. didn't mean to sound harsh there dude.
