This season looks to be a lot different and not just b/c of the actor of course. I don't envision very many arena battles, which stinks.

The first episode was about what I expected. I lot of fake blood, neck slicing, and nudity. I will be watching the rest of the season though.

I'm looking forward to Gannicus returning. I hope he's care free badass Gannicus and not emo Gannicus.

I agree with with many of the comments here. The Extreeeeee Blood... Cripes, give it a break. Next to last episode Spartacus killed an old guy and his "Intestines" spilled out of him. Cripes again. Walking dead has better effects.
So far, not likey the new Spartacus... But will give him a chance.

I went and saw Haywire yesterday and couldn't understand why it was rated R... then I remembered one scene where they showed someone putting a pillow over someone else's head and pulling the trigger. Shoot the scene just a little differently, and you've got a PG-13 flick no problem... and probably a lesser attendance.

So, I was watching Spartacus: Gods of the Arena on Starz the other day as I was channel-surfing with my family.

I happened upon the scene (in the beginning where they showed what happened previously) where Ganakus (sp?) slices that dude's throat and the gratuitous violence made me smile, and my family really upset. They are really sensitive to violence (I'm dead serious; we walked out of Beowulf - a cartoon - because they thought it was too gory!) and it made me think about how "far" (low?) we have come in display media (TV/movies etc.); how desensitized most viewers have become to violence and sex on screen.

I swear to Cow, I saw that episode later and it was copious amounts of blood or boobies; nothing wrong with the latter of course, but for a TV show?!? Damn!

Anyone else feel that Spartacus' level of violence and sex is "too much" or a bit 'extreme' for TV? I know Starz is a "premium" channel so STFU about "don't watch if you can't handle it" BS. Using that "logic" (LOL), they should make snuff films (a la Manhunt) and put it on a "premium" channel for "discerning adults" to watch!

Where do we, as a society, that is supposedly humanE, draw the line to senseless desensitization? Is censorship a good thing? Where do we draw the line? And more importantly, who draws it?

I think it's interesting to think about that. I mean, PG-13 movies back in the day (high school in the late 90's) were considered "raunchy" and "violent" and that stuff is now in the realm of PG movies! Fifty years from now we'll have 10 year olds watching porn and execution videos during "recess"!

How good does he need to be? The show is not now nor has it ever been about acting. It's all violence and T&A. The actor playing Spartacus could be replaced by a cardboard cutout of Carrottop and the show wouldn't change in any measurable way.

This show is such a guilty pleasure...lol. Who didn't know Tiberius would "betray" Spartacus, only to actually save them all.

The new blonde is pretty great, trying to sleep with Crixus's luitenant to gain position.

Doctore got some nice fights in. It was interesting how they portrayed Batiatus Senior. He seemed more honorable and caring, especially towards Oenemeus. However they made Batiatus Sr. appear like a pushover in the past season. Batiatus JR was a total asshole, but an awesome character.

Batiatius' have the best one liners....especially about spreading cheeks and ramming..lol.

My point is however, that people watched this stuff in reality for entertainment for years. While we've come a ways, we haven't come THAT far. Violence is a big part of our humanity. I don't see that changing any time soon. Our sports are violent to varying degrees), sure no one is allowed to die, but that's what fantasy is for. People don't watch races to see the circles, they watch them for the crashes. People watch hockey for the fights, etc etc.

Hopefully we get to see Oenameus in the arena. I think it both previous episodes, they just alluded to his badassery, but he never fought in the arena. GOTA they were show casing GAnnicus, and BAS he was Doctore so obviously didn't fight.

I wonder if they'll try to make the gladiators fight each other....like Crixus vs Rhaskos and Oenameus vs GAnnicus (when he returns), or if they'll try some crazy think like "Gladiator" where they attempt to mimic past fights with roman soldiers vs severly outmatached gladiators.

I hasn't overly impressed by episode 4 b/c it was just running around in the forrest over and over losing unnamed gladiators for 1/2 of it. The other 1/2 was a giant orgy and scheming by Illythia and Zena while the men in power are total knuckleheads who can't hatch a scheme or figure out if they are being backstabbed (Glabber). It's funny when you see these gladiators/slaves all of a sudden appear for 1 episode walking around with Spartacus or Crixus. I always think to myself.....sorry dude, you aren't making it out of this episode alive...lol.

I wonder if the creators of the show will end up killing the slave raping dude who appeared again this season. I think he's officially been named one of the creepiest mofos to ever appear as a minor character in a series. It would be like a big "here you go fans!!" to see him humiliated in the arena or something...lol. Maybe let Navea cut his wang off (wasn't Navea friends with that other slave girl?). Sometimes I get Navea and Melitta confused.
