I started watching through this show via Netflix at the recommendation of a couple of friends. Basically what everyone has already said in this thread is true. The first season is pretty slow the first few episodes. I was warned about this by said friends, so I stuck through it. It really picks up and gets interesting about 4-6 episodes in and keeps its hooks in you until the end.
There's nothing really spectacular about the show that stands out, but it's still good. The acting isn't anything special, the gratuitous gore is poorly done, and the storyline is pretty simple all the way through. It really makes me think of it as basically a dudebro soap opera. The show pulls absolutely no punches and does whatever the fuck it wants, I guess that's part of the appeal. That and the softcore porn scenes.
Just finished watching the 2nd season last night.. Very entertaining and riveting story!! enjoyed it a lot!! S3x and violence has gone down drastically expect for the last episode.
But WTF??? its done? only six episodes? thats it??? anyone has any news on the 3rd season??? I am sad now...
It's been stated a couple of times in the thread already, but I'll recap.
Basically, "Spartacus: Of Blood and Sand" was season 1 and started the entire thing. Shortly after season 1 wrapped up production, the main actor was found to have cancer and went into treatment for it. It appeared he had beaten it but the cancer came back a few months later.
I believe that during his first battle with cancer, the producers decided to delay the second season and instead produce a 6-episode prequel that didn't include the main guy but would still show the events leading up to the first season.
However, after the cancer came back, the actor told the producers that he was out and to simply recast him instead of canceling the show, so that's what they are doing. Season 2 will start in January 2012 I believe. So when season 2 starts, it should pick up right from season 1, the only difference being the main actor will be different.
