I think we need more shows that aren't afraid to show how brutal and sexual humans really are. Plus it's freaking awesome to see a hot hollywood actress nude and having [simulated] sex...

I started watching through this show via Netflix at the recommendation of a couple of friends. Basically what everyone has already said in this thread is true. The first season is pretty slow the first few episodes. I was warned about this by said friends, so I stuck through it. It really picks up and gets interesting about 4-6 episodes in and keeps its hooks in you until the end.

There's nothing really spectacular about the show that stands out, but it's still good. The acting isn't anything special, the gratuitous gore is poorly done, and the storyline is pretty simple all the way through. It really makes me think of it as basically a dudebro soap opera. The show pulls absolutely no punches and does whatever the fuck it wants, I guess that's part of the appeal. That and the softcore porn scenes.

It's been stated a couple of times in the thread already, but I'll recap.

Basically, "Spartacus: Of Blood and Sand" was season 1 and started the entire thing. Shortly after season 1 wrapped up production, the main actor was found to have cancer and went into treatment for it. It appeared he had beaten it but the cancer came back a few months later.

I believe that during his first battle with cancer, the producers decided to delay the second season and instead produce a 6-episode prequel that didn't include the main guy but would still show the events leading up to the first season.

However, after the cancer came back, the actor told the producers that he was out and to simply recast him instead of canceling the show, so that's what they are doing. Season 2 will start in January 2012 I believe. So when season 2 starts, it should pick up right from season 1, the only difference being the main actor will be different.

I really like how they wrapped the prequel up and tied it to the end of last season. I like the show, and while it's negligibly true (the characters (Spartacus and Crixus and the Batiatus house and a few others) most everything else is just good story telling.
Did they use that profane language so freely? No idea, but when you're entertainment is watching men disembowel, behead, and slaughter each other, language is probably the tamest thing going.

Watch season 2, the prequel, (Gods of the Arena) first and tell us about your experience!

God of the Arena is not season 2. Its just a 6 episode prequel to season 1. Season 2 starts January 2012 sometime.

The final kill in episode 6 of the prequel was pretty nasty but awesome just the same

So if I haven't watched any of it yet, should I start with the prequel? Or start with season 1 and then watch the prequel?

Start with prequel and let us know about your experience! it should be fun!! That will follow the chronological time line of the story!

Since the episodes were written in the order they aired, it's no big deal to watch them in the order aired.

Finished episode 6 of the prequel last night and already went through the first season over last month. It's an entertaining show, I'm hoping that Season 2 is just as good or better.

I say start with season 1 and THEN watch the prequel. That's the way I did it and I liked how they filled in how some things came to be in season 1 that you never really thought about before.

But you honestly can't go wrong with either way.

Well if you watch the prequel first it would give away the ending of season 1 on the last episode.

Id stick with season 1, then the prequal. As they were aired.

True, but it wouldn't have if he didn't know it was the ending of season 1!!! The first episode of the prequel was my first foray into the Spartacus series, but then switched over to season 1 afterwards. I didn't know I had already technically seen the ending to season 1, so no biggie. Once my friend told me I had already seen the ending from watching that episode, I couldn't even remember what I had seen or what happened.
