This game is a good buy, for $15 it's pretty easy to pick up and learn and if you were an old-school Star Control 2 (or similar) fan it plays along similar lines.

tried out the particle cannon yesterday, and have just been playing around in the zombie territories...

man those things are freaking annoying. Especially since the grinder has absolutely no way of really getting rid of the little people things and the zombies have some strangely powerful cannons.

I've been running from one conflict zone to another, hoping to pick up some schematics. So far only managed to pick up a few sunspot (the circle things) and one or 2 other huge ones. Been looking for hammerheads but they don't ever seem to die... even with a little push on my end.

Enjoying the Mule more than the Grinder or the Right hook actually.

Just finally found enough pieces of my "Flora" to make a drone carrier.

Going to respec into drones/missiles for this guy.

The game is great, but it's for people with too much time IMO. It feels like Civ 5 or GalCiv I or II, even though it's not the same type of a game.

it does suck up a lot of time. I also have Vampire Bloodlines to finish up, Bastion and Assassin's Creed Brotherhood to play, but I keep going back to SPAZ

Yeah, I find myself farming a lot in the high end zones for credit (to buy schematics) and for goons (to bribe gate guardS) because my ship isn't strong enough to blast through hammerhead gate guards.

There has to be a way to mine res faster...

They tell you how in the tutorial.

Find a Friendly or Non-Hostile Mining Base (Starmap -> top left hand corner, hover, look for green ones)

Wait a good 60 seconds then switch to your mining ships. Tell the AI to travel to the mining asteroid and it'll mine automatically.

I typically use my 'Loadout C' to make my shopping trips. Mule with no weapons, basic shield, top engine, two tractor beams and the rest into Engine boosters and similar on the Tug are great rez farmers.

There's also an option in the settings to allow SPAZ to continue running without locking to main menu when you Alt+Tab out. This means your mining team can work along and you can do something productive on Anandtech

I've been making shopping trips but it still takes a while to fill out. I'll look at that option in settings though...

I've resorted to simply blowing up space stations now and not even worrying about shopping.

Smash and grab technique.

Since I'm in zombie territory They tie up the faction fighter's and sometimes even the base defenses. The rest is history.

I have a few questions that are bugging me.

1. I see some indications of overdrive (speed boost at cost of energy?). I haven't been able to find any key to initiate it. Does it exist?

2. How do I go about finding the mothership upgrades? Are they plot driven or purchaseable at bases like the normal techs?

3. On the crosshair, what does the green balls at the bottom indicate? On a tier 3 ship I had 1, on my tier 4 it shows 2 out of 5 possible.

Mothership upgrades are plot based. Just progress through the storyline and you'll get them. The little green balls under your recticle shows how full your cargo bays are.

1. No 'Afterburner' exists. The only reference I can think of for 'Overdrive' is Booster Overdrive in the Subsystems Tech tree. This increases the effectiveness of any Boosters used.

2. All story driven upgrades. Complete more story, your mothership will automatically be upgraded at the appropriate times.

3. No idea. I haven't actually paid any attention to the,. It's like the missile indicator on the crosshair, never even considered using it.

1. Dunno
2. Story Driven
3. Missiles ready to Fire IIRC.

I wish my ships were strong enough to do that. Lvl 1 space stations no problem, but the level 2 and 3s cause me a lot of grief. And not to mention I'm in the lvl 50+ zones right now and it's really hard to even get through their shields now...

Remembered another question, is there any way to drop off goons at your beacon like cargo? It would come in real handy because I max out a lot on maps.

FYI, missile indicator is a little white missile picture to left or right of crosshair. So far I have only had two launchers, but I imagine 3+ launchers would still be in the same place.

You can't drop them off at beacons, but if you open up strategy and have the ship in question warp out for repair, they'll drop off any excess over your set crew limit.

23 hours. Somewhat taking my time. Extremely enjoyable...probably finish in another 7 hours.

Worth the money

finished the normal mode with a full loadout of particle cannons on... well pretty much every ship. Had a hammerhead loaded out with 2 triple mounts x 3 heavy particle cannons and 2 medium ones, never really ran out of reactor juice. Is that normal?...

Also tried the fusion beams for a little bit. I like the range much better on the particle cannons though. Maybe if i had more subsystem research...

Sounds normal to me. Cannons are OP.

Fusion Beam length is not increase by subsystem tech. Subsystem beam length affects tractor beams and point defense guns only iirc.

hooookay. Time to respec... lol.

Seems like the best way to go through the game is to use beams with leecher until you can get particle cannons, then ez-mode your way through everything?

The particle cannon is so strong its ridiculous. With a few upgrades you have virtually no reload time!

Step 1: Find and Unlock Sunspot
Step 2: Unlock Fortress Shield, Bomber Drones and cannons
Step 3: Take over the Universe.
