Just curious if anyone knows how to lower or get rid of the background hissing you get with some speaker sets. (I'm speaking of the Logitec Z-680 specifically) Are there wires that will reduce the noise, etc? Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks

Have you tried putting cotton balls in your ears? Those aren't exactly top of the line speakers.

Make sure everything is grounded properly and all connections are clean and secure

I've read that the 680s have a low quality amp which leads to hiss. not that they're terrible speakers, there are worse by far. If you have an equalizer, turn the higher frequencies down a bit.

shielded wires that reduce intereference will help some
making sure the speakers and computer have a good ground will help

the biggest issue is that most computer speakers have cheap amp designs which let in a lot of hiss. The second biggest issue is that the sound card has a crappy DAC design and also there is a lot of electrical interfernce in a computer case.

If you can't buy new stuff, turn down your speaker volume and turn up your windows/wave/winamp/wmp volume to compensate. One thing that helped me was to switch to a high quality external USB sound card w/ a high end DAC inside. That way the audio stays digital and thus immune to eletrical interefence until it gets out of the electrically noisy computer case..then gets converted to analog.

There's something wrong with the z680s. This is a well documented problem. Easiest fix is to buy nicer speakers. Klipsch Promedia 5.1 Ultras or Creative Gigaworks come to mind.

Alright. However, I'm not using these with a computer. Anything that might work, reciever wise, etc? Thanks for all the advice so far.

That was my first thought, but I don't know if it works the same for computer audio as it does for home theater.

I guess there's only one way to find out -- make sure your computer speakers are plugged into a different circuit (seperate ground) than your computer is. That will eliminate any ground loop feedback.

take the snake out of the subwoofer.

edit: actually, i think there is something you can do about this... lemme go dig up the thread...

edit: according to kaido in this thread, you can send in your control box to Logitech, and they'll send you a newer revision. *shrug* seems like its worth a shot.
