Speaker question (did I do any damage?)

I have an older Kenwood reciever, 60 watts I believe, I bought it back in '94. I have it hooked up to big old Acoustic Research speakers purchased in the late 70's. Well, I moved one of the speakers this afternoon, (weighs around 50 pounds), and when I turned on the reciever to play a CD the amp's power stayed on, but the sound clicked off and "Protected" flashed across the screen. I use fairly thick monster cable, and I'm pretty sure when I moved the speaker the wires touched together at the speaker side of the connection. The stereo seems fine, but can this do damage?

Try unplugging the stereo and trying again. When you crossed the wires you shorted the stereo. Hopefully it was turned off before you did this? Even so, you may have damaged the reciever. Unplugging may reset the breaker. But if it is fused based you'll need to have repairs done.

Well, I reconnected the wires better so that they won't touch again, and when I turned on the reciever everything seemed fine, so I guess no damage was done. phew!

Your amp sounds like it has an anti-short protection circuit. If it didn't and you touched the + and - sides of one channel you would blow that channel of your amp. If you are going to reconnect a speaker and there is a possibility of shorting the leads, turn the amp off first.

DON'T CROSS THE STREAMS! It would be bad.
