I havne't heard the Bic ones you linked, but they might be worth a try. Perhaps you could wait to see if anyone can chime in who has heard them
Jump on the Jamo C401 speakers and don't look back. They are normally $400 a pair, right now they are $79 with free shipping. Direct Vanns link
I will wait... hopefully someone knows if they are good or bad.
I am in no particular hurry, I am currently using an old aiwa nsx-s222 stereo I had literally lying around.

For the same price you could do a LOT worse than these:

I do not personally have this set, but when mine go out, this is what I'm going to buy.
does the cd changer still work?
a long while back they were known for problematic cd changers.
If you want to go with 2.1 multimedia speakers, get the promedia and be done.
If you're looking for t-amp + bookshelves, the bic you linked might be a good deal at such a low price. The polk monitors are no doubt a good choice. You might also consider the insignia B2111 speakers from bestbuy

try to find a 10% off coupon to sweeten the deal (local post office should have 10% bb coupons in the movers packets)
it still work... there is a firmware bug where, under certain replicatable conditions, it will put 2 CDs on the same slot in the changer, causing it to jam... I have fixed that a couple of times and learned to avoid that specific behavior... unfortunately, I forgot what exactly it WAS over the years... so I might do it again some day by accident
which would produce better quality audio and more accurate reproduction, the 2.1 or the t-amp + bookshelves?
These may be too $$$ for your budget, but Max PC just gave them 10 points and a Kick-Ass award saying they are the best they have ever tested.

I can't wait to audition them somewhere.

ah was just wondering cuz there was a class action over em, but the affected models pretty much had a ribbon cable that snapped itself.
that sounds a different issue altogether. I guess I would have to worry about that eventually happening.

Anyone get a chance to compare the KRK RP6's w/ Swans M50W?
Who really wants to flip each monitor around and twist a knob on the back every time you adjust volume? That's no way to live. You might think you'd be content to set volume levels through software, but it's not the same.
That said, I'd rather have two sixers at desktop level than twin 3.5"s with a 6.5" sub stashed below. Desk space is not a concern for me.
Take care with the M-Audio speakers, I've got a pair of M-Audio AV 40s, and they do have some static going on, and you will hear it if you sit next to them. I've always used them with my HDTV so I don't actually hear it, but I suspect that the standard cable isn't all that good. Might be dirty power issues as well though.
