Being the gracious guy I am I offered to help a friend move this weekend as I have a big truck and I'm a strong guy, and well shes a girl that begged which helped the decision. She told me all it was was her bed and a "few other pieces of furniture".
So I get to her house and in the living room there is a big glass table, a big oak sofa/bed, and a bunch of chairs. Luckily were not moving those (or so i was told). All of this was on tile so no shoe issues yet. She takes me back to her bedroom and right before the door she asks me to take my shoes off, and next to the door there are her 30+ pairs of shoes strewn about. Now I came prepared, had my steel toe boots on because i know moving can be dangerous, but i obliged and entered, kinda wondering why - f your moving out - must the carpets still remain so perfect.
So the "few other pieces of furniture" turn out to be an entertainment center, a 34" rear projection TV (one of the big ass heavy sony WEGA trinitron things - how they got it up there I'll never know) on TOP of the entertainment center (about 5 ft up), a queen sized wooden bed frame, a couple glass cases, and a desk. So there I am in my socks, I take apart the bed frame as I don't want to carry out of the room as one big piece, then i go to help with the entertainment center. Well she had her boyfriend there who is a skinny asian guy and another friend there who was a medium sized guy. So asian guy goes to pull the TV off the shelf, black guy goes to help him, TV tips forward and for a brief instant I saw black guy getting crushed, his back buckling almost. Somehow they manage to crash it to the floor. Now black guy is thanking god and holding his back. So I help asian guy Pick up the TV and I suddenly feel all the weight shift to my side as were proceeding down the hall, this thing easily weighs 200+ pounds, and so I have to set it down. Of course at this point still in socks. Where does it come down? you guessed it right on my toes. Go back to room and BF starts getting all bent out of shape because they had scuffed the corner of the entertainment center as the TV was coming down.
So then Asian dude goes back to help black dude carry out entertainment center. I help move a glass case with the girl. All the sudden I hear this *shit* from down the hall - asian dude again has dropped a corner and edge of entertainment center has dropped on black dude's sock protected only toes. This makes girl lose track of what shes doing with glass case, I'm left holding it, and of course once again get my toes stubbed.
Well finally get everything to the trucks and go to tie things down and every time i tie something I hear this whine from the girl. Either the rope looks like its making a dent on the stuff, or it looks like something will fall off, or the rope is dirty and it was making her mattress dirty. I ask if she has any extra towels or carpet or blankets we can throw over - there are one or two but not enough for everything. I ask what she wants to do. She goes back with her boyfriend, while me and black guy hang outside and wait and laugh about how silly this all is. 15 minutes later they come out and say they have decided they will rent a u-haul tomorrow and do the move then. So untie everything thats already tied up, get it out of the trucks, and this time only move it as far as the garage. I say sorry cant come back tomorrow - its Easter.

If your going to ask people (not professionals) to help you move don't ask them to take off their shoes, expect your stuff to get scuffed/dirty, and be prepared.
