Back on April 25th, you gave me some excellent pointers on saving my XP system and files when I built a new computer. Well everything is in place now. Some changes, intel D845PESV motherboard, 2.66 gig P4. I need some clarification on your advice to me in April - you told me; "Build the system, install new HD as master . . . old drive as master on the secondary IDE . . . and the CDROM slaved on either port".

Then you said ... "Use the software from the drive manufacturer to copy the partition(s) from the old drive to the new drive . . . . ."

My problem ---- I have an old IBM 40GiG, and an Old IBM Disk Manager on CD. The new HD is a 60GiG Hitachi (IBM) bought oem. Since they are both IBM at heart the manufacturer software should work but I don't find any program on the CD for copying files between HD's and there is no mention of NTSF file management which I use with XP. There is mention of FAT 32 and Win 2000 on other utilities on the disk. I checked Hitachi's web page for the latest HD software and copied the disk functional testing and disk utilities but saw nothing about transferring/copying files between HD. Am I missing something? Thanks loads!!!

i know maxtor and wd retail drives come with a utility to copy from your old drive. Did you get retail or oem? Also, if you just built a new computer, you'll probably want to reinstall anyways. Then just copy the files you need and format the old drive. You can technically change systems with winxp and maybe have the previous install work, but its much easier to reinstall fresh than sit for hours trying to fix one little problem that may or may not happen.

Thanks for the input sir, but your vulgarity overshadows your intellect -

Okay, does anyone see how the heck that was called for? Man, this forum is insane!

I believe(not sure tho..) the op was offended by the responder's sig line..
I'm so good looking, I get more ass than a toilet seat.
which I think is irrelevant to the advice (which is sound..) given ..but that's just what I believe..

I've been accused of being an old fuddy-duddy(sp?), but the sig line comment is so unnecessary. Please tell me how such remarks add to the purpose of this forum - and forgive me for starting a controversy about something that most certainly is not supporting the cause of shared computer knowledge.

My apology to the gentleman - I've should have just ignored his sig line.

I do have PMs enabled...

IBM/Hitachi appear not to have any tools for this. Older tools aren't likely to work, as XP creates partitions and NTFS formatting differently.

You might try the Data LifeGuard tools from Western Digital. For some reason when I download it it won't run, so I can't get a Readme file to be sure it works on non-WD hard drives.

Or try DrvImagerXP: http://www.softnews.ro/public/cat/13/2/13-2-39.shtml . I've never heard of it before but it seems to be what everyone would like to have.

The poster requests a member by name and someone else replies, then the thread turns into a train wreck. They should just rename GH to OT2

hmm...while personally I would rather not see any vulgarity in posts or sigs....methinks that the sig in question is fairly tame compared to other posts/sigs/insults/etc I have seen that would make a sailor blush.

On a related note, understanding how PM's work would have

1. Avoided cluttering the GH...which really is approaching OT2....
2. Avoided said "offensive" sig in the first place because there would be no thread to post in...
3. hmm...darn, lists always look better in threes

Thanks a lot Evermore, I'll try your suggested site and/or just forget it and start from scratch on the new system. i have a new WINXP so I'll pass the old one on to my wife. She's having the expected problems with WIN ME.

Thanks again.

P.S. My morse code is really rusty!

It doesn't help anything in reality...but making me laugh or think of sex is sort of cool by me.

I wasn't trying to be too vulgar in my sig, I actually just saw it on a keychain one time and thought it was kind of funny. I'll go ahead and ignore your intial response since you seem like a decent guy after reading your other stuff. Since this forum seems to consist of a mostly younger, 20-30ish, crowd that seem to accept this type of humor I have left this sig for a while. I hope you get your prob straightened out.

Given the rabid nature the mods have in response to some minor things, your sig really would be expected to draw their wrath. But of course we can't expect them to DO any moderating.

Wanna Bet?
