rasputinj, my understanding is that Spectek is Micron's second-quality memory label (first-quality gets labelled MT). Crucial is Micron's branded module division, and typically but not always uses MT labelled chips. As a matter of product positioning, I doubt that Micron would put the Crucial (first-quality brand) name on memory with Spectek (second-quality) chips.

Unfortunately, most of the deals are on the second-quality stuff.

First-quality memory isn't always what it claims to be... so second-quality just scares me.

I have used it on a couple of machines, because of the cheap price. It worked well. I would not OC with it by any means. I did not get any errors on Memtest with them either. I figure since I purchased them at OM, if I had a problems off the bat, then they are going back to OM.

Cheap memory for a 2400 though.

rasputinj, it's just a you get what you pay for. For a value home system, this is probably fine. It's a good price, too. My main issue was with your mention of Crucial, which I believe is incorrect here - it would lead people to believe that this is higher quality memory than it is, and appropriate for being used in ways it isn't.

Unless you're trying to claim that Spectek isn't produced by Crucial, I don't see your point.

You should edit the post title and add AR, for after rebate. This is a common courtesy that most people appreciate.

My $0.02:

I've had SpecTek DIMMS where the Micron logo is xxx'd out. They worked fine for me @ standard FSB & SPD timings.

Kingston Value has never let me down and always seems to use "name brand" ICs.

All I know for sure: I'll never waste my time (and sanity) using pure generic RAM (again).

I have a SpecTek stick ($10 256MB PC2100 Kbyte ram). It was the best chip that I could find in a bundle with many VT and Elixir sticks. It has the MT logo on it, but it's black text on a white background instead of vice-versa.

This ram barely goes above 133MHz. CL2 causes an instant crash, and at CL2.5, it goes unstable at about 137MHz.

On the contrary, the FAR PC2100 256MB of Kingston Valueram I have runs at PC2700 CL2 without extra voltage So I wouldn't say this stuff is Crucial quality, whereas Kingston Valueram can be pretty good stuff sold for cheap. Pretty good for ram that doesn't even have markings on the chips

My 2cents...

I've used Elixer rams I bought from Frys under generic rams. Abit Kr7A crashed constantly and had multiple lock ups. Will never purchase Elixers again.

Purchased some Kingston Value Rams with Infineon Chhipsets. Worked perfectly but I could only crank it out to 152Mhz before it gave errors on Prime. Although these were PC2100, Overclocking leaves a bit to to be desired.

Purchased some more Kingston Value Rams with kinston written on the chip itself.
Mobo failed to recognize these kingstons completely. Compatibility has some issues.

Lesson learned: You get what you pay for.

PS: some people obtained Kingston ValueRams with samsung chips on it and easily overclocked to 166Mhz

SpecTec - hahahaha!

It's quickly earning the NIC of "RejectTec" by techs, because of the amount of problem calls over Micron's grade B memory....

Were you disappointed after you bought and used it, or are you just disppointed now after reading the thread?

While a lot of users around here may overclock, most computer users don't.

Just wondering.

I bought some Spectek when BB had is on sale for the same price a few weeks ago and it wouldn't get along with the Crucial I already had in the system, it would also only work in the second slot by itself.

I agree, Kingston's can be good depending on which chipsets you get.
It's really a mixed bag.
They sometimes have Spektek on them as well, and I stayed far, far away from those.

Spektec memory is not (or at least was not until recently) made by Crucial. Spektec was a separate company and was bought by Micron, so officially they are a division of Micron. I'm pretty sure the chips are still made in their old plants.

That being said, I've had very good experience with recent Spektec modules, both PC2100 and PC2700. They worked in every MB I put them in, but I did not try to overclock them. I have one computer at home with an ECS MB, and I've put them in boxes I built for other people, and never had a memory-related problem.

analogous to cisco buying linksys. linksys != cisco quality (nor subquality) products.

i purchased a PNY 256 PC2700 sodimm several weeks ago and it's been running fine on my ibm laptop.
