Speculation on Ryzen Overclocking

How do we all think overclocking is going to play out with the initial release?

Since they are all unlocked the Enthusiast in me says we should all be buying the lowest end SKU's and shooting for the moon, overtaking the higher end SKU's.

But there is another part of me that thinks if there is any supply issues at launch then the binning will separate the chips that can actually obtain the higher clocks and that therefore the higher end SKU's will likely clock higher at least at the start and the low end SKU's may not clock well.

Opinions?

Personally im going to wait till summer and see which boards have a good VRM setup anyways and which SKU's seem to clock the best.

Yeah, I think they are binning like mad, and the low end models won't see much of a bump, unless of course, the fabs they are using are churning out very good yields (which is doubtful going by GF's past history.)

My sweet spot is going to be a 1600x. I have no need for 8 cores and can put the $130 price difference between the 1600x and 1700x into a water cooled build.

All rumors at this point, but there's speculation that chips could be produced in Samsung fabs as well. So there may be "binning" and differential OC results if one fab makes better (for OC) chips than the other. Or so goes the (as yet unsubstantiated) rumor.

Yeah, I have heard similar info about them using multiple fabs, that is even more reason to wait and see which fab makes the better chip, then, finding which company sells chips from that fab.
In fact, I recall places selling specific revision of opteron's (and others) since they were well known for good o/c'ing.

well first its a question how good will XFR be if it can reach frequencies overclockers could with manual overclockig then manual OC will be useless for using PC but not competing who reaching higest clocks

I may be wrong, but I think AMD have structured their agreement with GloFlo to allow them to build Ryzen via other fabs if GloFlo struggle to supply the requisite volumes (with penalties).

I believe they have to pay GF the margin GF would have otherwise gotten per wafer. Given TMSC has gross margins around 50% lets say AMD gets a GF discount so GF margin is 40% ( that seems reasonable to me) then per chip not manufactured at GF AMD will have to pay GF somewhere between $8-$12 a chip (assuming between 5-7k a wafer and 240 usable chips a wafer).

if you like to gamble for cheap performance the 6c/12t is the place to put your money. You might get a Golden Sample chip that had a faulty core or you might get a dud since they are all cut down chips. With the 8c/16t I really think you will get what you pay for, Cheapest model = one that has 8 functioning cores and that's about it, especially this early in the run.

Admittingly the XFR slide was extremely confusing, but still the slide doesn't say anything about XFR being an "automated overclocking" feature.
XFR stands for Extended Frequency Range and that's exactly what it is, literally.

So... Overclocked?

I cannot say anything further about the subject. As soon as the reviews are out, the functionality of the XFR will immediately become clear to everyone.

Will it be more or less effective than those "extension" ads I keep getting in my spam email?

Maybe it means that it will boost to turbo frequency longer (because it's smarter) but not actually go above set turbo freq.
