Basically almost the same performance for probably around the same price. After two years quite underwhelming to be honest. This generation is extremely disappointing.
Then get ready for future, where process tech doesn't yield almost any perf improvements. Current gen is a result of AMD not executing correctly, and Nvidia abusing this to the limits.

Future gens however are on the mercy of good process nodes.

We can't catch a break, the previous gen was pretty good, but Mining meant you were out of luck trying to buy at MSRP, and the generation before that was another let down...

I think the last time people were happy with a GPU generation, was with NVidia Pascal, back in 2016.

AMDs biggest problem with these cards will be the pricing of AMD RX 6000 cards.
To a degree. i want to up my display to 4k and with that finally retire my 290x (sic). Since prices are sky high and money doesn't grow on trees, the new gen hopefully uses less power and hence has a small cooler so they fit in my old case. (29 cm max length) There are no dual fan 6800 (xt) so a 7800 (xt) dual fan would fit and save power (expensive here).

Nearly any card can be good for someone, if the price is right.

AMDs biggest problem with these cards will be the pricing of AMD RX 6000 cards.
That is why after just 6 months of 5500XT 8GB's both my nephews are getting brand new RX 6800's for £60 less than the MSRP of the 6700XT (£419 MSRP). It does help that they come with Starfield Premium but 7800 series is just too far out & will be over £150 more expensive for little expected improvement. I will probably still buy a 7800XT (XTX?) for myself but could go for 7900XT if it drops much further.

6800 for that cost with a bundled game that isn't (hopefully) some crapware that companies are trying to get rid of is a great deal. Even though it's an older card, it should last for a while.

Straight 6800 is a really solid card. All the IC of the bigger boys, modest clocks and pretty cut cores but really balanced. Crushes Deep Rock, the only game I am playing right now.

Except for RT and the games where that is a requirement.

Just waiting for any sort of viable upgrade, thinking that this gen (RDNA3) is the new RDNA OG and that RDNA4 will be the next sweet spot.

- RDNA evens upgrade to evens and odds to odds. So if you're on a 5700XT, the 7700(XT) will probably be the right card for you.

If you're on a 6800, the 8800 aught to do the trick (If AMD ends up with a banger on their hands, then they should just go straight to calling it the 9800XT).

I was on a 5700XT and the 6800 was the right card long ago

Quite seriously, there is no reason to hang on for these cards. The 7900XT/XTX are fine if you want something faster than RDNA2, the rest is really meh.

Not a reviewer, but I can confirm. Tested in a short Prologue segment, 1440p, Ultra preset:
~ 75fps - 23.4.1 driver
88 fps - 23.7.1 driver
Game version 1.1.0.0, Home PC in sig

Free performance update is always nice. I was more talking about the very large RDNA3 increases (up to 67%) they were talking about though.

That was the biggest increase, yes.
Hey 15% is nothing to sneeze at. I don't have Forza, but so far in my test my 7900 XT outpaced my 4070 Ti by marginal amounts (1440p) in the games I'm playing. If drivers keep improving an generate an average 15% gain, the 7900 XT become a much better buy (particularly with prices dropping faster than NV cards). The hardware resources are very good on the 7900 XT - score of ~35,000 in Firestrike extreme vs ~25,000 for the 4070 Ti. AMD just needs to getting some of that extra hardware working in more games with better drivers.

Not discounting the improvement, it’s just that extraordinary claims need verification. Getting a 67% increase from a driver update is pretty extraordinary so it’d be nice to see others confirm it. I don’t remember the RDNA3 cards being vastly behind in Forza in reviews as to point to a bug fix causing the large increase, but it’s also a game I don’t really pay attention to so maybe RDNA3 was buggy on this game and this driver just finally fixed the bug.

Or maybe there was just an issue with the reviewers setup on the old driver so the increase isn’t actually there which is why it’s nice to get others to confirm.

That from 7600 review. Look at 7900XT numbers

I know it's basically impossible to get at easily, but did power usage go up?

It seems like if the hardware was better utilized more power would be used. If it was some game specific optimization that reduced wasted effort by the hardware then perhaps power usage would remain the same.

I am just curious, not really expecting an answer.

LOL. I was talking about the 15% increase that @PJVol posted. Ring around the rosy here.

It doesn't look that strange to me. Under performing a bit, but not by that much.

If you look at the expanded results, it looks like it is under performing by around 15% or so, not 60%. Additionally, if you give the 7900XT the boost the other reviewer is reporting, it would be matching or slightly beating the RTX4090. While this certainly isn't impossible, I would need to see the numbers verified by another party before really trusting that a driver gave such a large increase that the 7900XT is now matching an RTX4090 in this title.
