They could do RDNA2 rebrands instead if they feel like they need something inbetween.
Honestly, if there really is more demand for 12GB+ cards compared to 8GB, AMD can just keep Navi22 in production, as step below Navi 32:
335mm² of N7 vs 356mm² mix of N6 and N5.

That way they'll keep a 12GB offer for ~320 dollars.

- Just port it over to N6 and go all in on the die space savings without trying to monkey with performance.

They bothered to give it a US MSRP. Maybe it will show up globally (I mean the US lol)

Eventually I expect some variation of this (smaller package with 16GB) to be a retail US product as well, maybe call that one 7800XT.

Either way, it's clear that's a real product shipping soon.

Looks like the GRE isn't just Chinese brands but established AMD AIBs. Guessing we'll see a US launch before too long.

It kinda feels like AMD is trying to do NV's thing in reverse. NV will attach a Super or Ti to the name, up the price a tiny bit, and offer slightly more performance with a tweaked die.

AMD appears to be attaching a new suffix, dropping the price a tad, and offering slightly less performance with a tweaked die.

IMO if they're using N32 package for N31 I feel like that's not a great sign for N32 either. Basically they have a ton of N32 interposer/fan-outs sitting around and no plans to make use of them anytime soon... so might as well throw N31s on them so they're not a total write off and call it a day...

The what.
N31 uses N31 InFO sheet, N32 uses N32 InFO sheet.
Substrate is whatever.

- Maybe I'm misunderstanding all the hubbub about the GRE edition appearing to put an N31 die on N32 packaging (hence the smaller more square footprint behind the die) and using the wrong language.

My simpleminded understanding is N32 stuff is being used for N31 dies, suggesting N32 stuff isn't going to be used for N32 dies anytime soon.

7900 GRE suggests to me, yet again, that N32 is cancelled or at least a total turd. They release another product in the place where top-bin N32 - if it could clock to 3GHz - would have landed.

80 CU N31 should be 2250MHz to match a 60CU 3GHz N32 and GRE is... 2245MHz. With N32 memory configuration. And using what look like N32 boards too.

So if N32 is coming this year then clocks are likely to be low and slots in well below the 7900 GRE. Although on occasion AMD has been known to introduce totally useless products quickly made obsolete (3800XT comes to mind - 4 months of marginal relevance).

Nvidia literally spams day1 obsolete SKUs midway into lineup's lifecycle so how is this anything special (or new to GPU games)?
Has Nvidia done something like that any time recently? The closest is the 3090 Ti but that was 1.5 years in the 3000 series lifecycle. Buyers had to know they were getting something that would be obsolete 6 months later.

"I know we announced the 7900 GRE 2-3 months ago but now that the return window has closed we are announcing the 7800 XT and it's just as fast, $50 cheaper, and uhhhhhh sorry if you bought the GRE!". That's what launching a 3GHz N32 this year would sound like. I suspect AMD isn't having another XT moment and N32 is closer to 2600 MHz or not launching in 2023.

Ada's been barely released.
It's already been almost a year
I mean Nvidia had such bangers as 3070ti or 3060ti G6X edition (I can go on but still).
SKU spam is OK in GPU lands; just kinda obnoxious.
3070 Ti was more expensive, didn't obliviate the 3070. 3060 Ti G6X didn't render the 3060 Ti obsolete and was over a year later.
I don't have anything against the GRE being part of a line up - except the stupid name - but its mere existence suggests that N32 is quite a bit lower in the line up than some (a dwindling few) had hoped.

3070 made those new parts obsolete by themselves.
It's SKU spam for the sake of SKU spam.
SKU spam makes sense if you can get another $100 for the same die.
It doesn't make sense when you're selling N31 for N32 prices.
Whatever AMD is doing it isn't part of a strategy it's some kind of Goodenough Reaction to Emergency
or maybe Godawful Radeon Execution
