OTOH, at $400 7700 XT would be a killer card IMO.

- Yep, 7800XT's price is actually pretty ok at $500, but the 7700XT is actually rather disappointing at $450. Maybe $420 (ya mon) or ideally $400 would have really kicked in the teeth of the 4060Ti.

Maybe we get a 48CU 8GB part 7700 further down the line that occupies that sub $300 spot...

Yes, with something like 6750XT. Dont expect more cards, they only have three chips and NAVI32 is just 200mm2, no way to cut it more , they preferer to sell more RDNA2 bellow 450-500 USD to plug in the 300-400 USD segment than have another cut down version of NAVI32.
There is definitely going to be another cut of N32. 7700XT has disabled one WGP per SE, any dies with more than one fault per SE (including ones where a fault hits between WGPs) is not going to be usable as 7700XT.

I suspect there will be some time until a 7700 non-XT, though. They'd prefer you buy a more expensive cut.

Based on this:

It seems FSR3 has 2 main components, one is the frame generation (likely the only part most are thinking of) and the other is the upscaling. Which to me means that FSR3 also supersedes FSR v2.2.1 or whatever the last build of FSR2 was. Unlike how nVidia made DLSS 2 and 3 a distinct thing you have to select/use (abstracting gen-locking you if you're not on RTX 4000), at least initially.
Interesting, but no idea if this means the upscaling part got any improvements as well. The "Native FSR" (+FG+Anti-Lag+) image sample they showed sure looks better than native, but that's not what I'm interested in.

I guess when they loosely imply FSR3 will run on old hardware (such as Polaris or older) they actually mean just the upscaling part, you need RDNA1 or higher for the frame generation (or similar gen from the competition).

I can see a 1 SE disabled config for 40CUs as a 7600XT with 12GB of slower vram. Maybe sell it for $330-$350 and you have a 4060ti performing part for less with more vram.

Board power is higher than expected, clocks even lower than I expected (but only by 70MHz). Price as expected (no improvement). Who would buy this over a RTX 4070?
What are you talking about?
Everyone Most expected $549 or more, this $499 is actually a decent price.

I also have a question. Why should I choose RTX 4070 over this?
What's the big advantage over 7800XT to pay 20% more?
The only good thing going for It is power consumption. RT is also better, but only when It has enough Vram.
What's left? DLSS or frame generation? LOL. That should be used as a last option, not as a reason for buying a new GPU.

This kinda reminds me of the previous generation(Ampere vs RDNA2) battle. So many said to buy Ampere, It has better features and better RT. How did It end?
If you bought RTX 3060Ti, 70, 70Ti then now you have insufficient Vram, causing lower performance in RT, which was a selling point over RDNA2.
The worse thing is that Ampere owners can't even use DLSS3 and frame generation. If they want that, then they will have to use FSR3. Ridiculous.

What do you think will happen with Ada after the next gen is out? Most likely the same thing.
So once more, why should I buy RTX 4070 over a cheaper RX 7800XT?

@PJVol Ok, I corrected It.

I was far from ever considering 4070 (or any nVidia GPU for the foreseeable future), but this 7800XT price reveal sort of made my day, even tho it's stretching my budget a bit. Went from considering a 6650XT/7600 or the most basic/cheap 6700XT I can find to a full-blown "$500" card smh lol

The +45% more performance (v 6700XT), extra VRAM and better feature-proofing (that's a thing for AMD now as well it seems, but it's bearable) make it look like a pretty good deal. Now I finally have something to aim for after I finish moving to my new place.

7800XT is priced better than I expected. $50 less for the 7700XT is definitely AMD saying "please buy the 7800XT, lol".

My takeaway from this is that I might as well just bite the bullet and get a 7900XT.

Obviously if you don't want to, you shouldn't. 7800 XT looks like a decently priced alternative.

Why I will likely still get a 4070.

Superior Ray Tracing.
Superior DLSS Image quality. No, it's not just a last resort, sometimes that's superior to the native presentation even when upscaling. that also includes DLAA which offers superior Anti Aliasing without scaling.
Superior power usage.
Superior support for non gaming compute/AI.

In general NVidia is ahead on software and AMD is playing follower, with inferior knockoff versions.

DLSS 3.5 expands on NVidia Ray Tracing lead by increasing the image quality of Ray Tracing.

I am talking about my expectations of course:
Less than 2600MHz as anticipated. Not fixed in anyway? As for the price it'll be $500.
DOA but at least it isn't totally dead.
Beating consensus is nothing new, it's typical with my haruspicy. But the clocks/power make it even less attractive than I had expected. It isn't dead dead but doesn't shift the needle at all.

As for the RTX 4070, it'll be quieter & they've been on sale for less than $600 here and there. If you waited this whole time without buying a 6800 XT why not wait for a discounted RTX 4070 instead and not have to worry about AMD's idle power problems or long delays in feature parity, if they ever do reach it.

A discounted 4070? I know things typically come down, but there is very little reason for these to come down in price substantially. Neither vendor particularly cares to move volume of these parts and we know nvidia doesn't care at all about how this impacts their AIB partners.

Unless nvidia does a price drop essentially now, I'd say things are likely to stay this way for quite a while.

Yes, they'll have a big ~200$ hole between 7600 and 7700XT. They won't be rushing to fill the gap, but they will eventually plug it with something new.
Good news, there's been talk for a little while about a card to slot in that gap, the 6750 GRE...

It has happened already, I know, hard to believe. But any normal non-Radeon inclined person waiting for this made the wrong choice and should have already bought an RTX 4070 during these times. Of course they couldn't have known that but all the people spreading rumors that AMD might be fixing N32 did nothing to help it.

7900 GRE has lower performance than 7900 XT... And it's just a rumor.

Buying next year's version of "8GB 3070" and thinking you're better off? lol yeah no

Also, I think you're grotesquely overestimating how many people cared or even knew of such a thing called "N32 delayed to get fixed, just wait". I call it the "enthusiast/nerd bubble", or "forum bubble" if you will.
