Speed limits going up

Why speed limits are rising

Kansas recently raised the speed limit on more than 1,000 miles of divided four-lane highways to 75 mph; the new limit takes effect July 1. Louisiana reset portions of a rural interstate to 75 mph in April, after observing that 85 percent of drivers were going at or below that speed. The same month, Ohio upped the speed on its turnpike to 70 mph.

Late last year, Virginia raised the speed limit on its rural interstates to 70 mph. And the Texas House of Representatives recently passed legislation to boost limits to 85 mph on highways in west Texas.

If the Texas Senate goes along, these will be the first U.S. highways to break the 80 mph barrier (Texas and Utah have each tried 80 mph limits)

Pretty neat, but my car is horribly inefficient above 75mph.
They all are, but from a safety perspective about fvcking time. The average car now is so much more competent at highway speeds than the slushy boats made decades ago it's absurd to keep forcing us to drive at ridiculously low speeds.

And if gas consumption is a problem put a law in saying that you can go up to 85 on public highways if your car is capable of 35 or more MPG on the highway. People will flock to fuel efficient vehicles and overall gas use would decrease plus we'd have more efficient motorways.

Sure. Roads would be safer, cars would be even more efficient since much smaller engines could be used.

Nope. The only thing unsafe are flocks of dozens of cars bunched up and unable to move because half a dozen oblivious drivers spread out doing 40 in a 55 and hell bent on claiming the road as their own.

Try as I might to stay in my lane and maintain a steady speed and avoid excessive lane changes, there are assholes in every lane with 15 cars behind and a mile of empty road ahead. These are also the people oblivious to their rear view mirror who slam their brakes at the last possible second and come to a complete stop to make their turn in a 45+ area, or occupy two lanes for half an hour as they ride their brake and drift into the left turn lane going 15 mph for three blocks.

These are the people that cause accidents, not the 15 people maintaining a constant 65+ who are alert and staying out of each others way. Tailgating and pile ups are caused by slow traffic, not fast traffic.

I would prefer everyone driving at a speed limit of 55.

Ill also point out that due to the divided nature of a highway, nearly all fatal high speed accidents are single vehicle. Self inflicted without harming others, which is perfectly acceptable.

So much truth.

Thats fine, that's what the right lane is for. Just be wary of the 85 mph speed limit in the left lane before you plop over going 45 in your Prius and start a pissing contest with a 8,000 lb truck going the speed limit.

I mean that I wish the speed limit were 55mph, period. And everyone observed it.

I would be happy if people just learned to observe the current speed limits.

It's true - if 15 people are speeding, and one is obeying the law, and something bad happens, well, you can't blame one accident on 15 people!

I mean you really are right, partly, but most drivers aren't nearly as good as they think they are, and it still requires a driver to successfully pilot a car.

Edit - I actually support speed minimum laws, but all the ones I have seen are 15-25mph below the limit, and so are useless.

I'm glad that 99% of drivers do speed to some degree. Most of us realize we aren't going to live to 300 years old and don't want to waste time. Sounds like you're better suited to public transport or taxis.

You really don't drive much, do you? I drive from NH to FL (or FL to NH) 2-3 times a year. A 55mph limit would be brutal.
It's just retarded. Even an entry level modern car can handle speeds much higher with complete poise. As long as other drivers are not idiotic and/or surfing the net while driving it's plenty safe. When you lower speed limits you also encourage more crowding on roads, which is the last thing we need.

That's funny. Who's 1mph over are we using......your speedometer which can be up to 5% off? The cop's radar and forget what your speedo says? A strict enforcement standard like that is unenforceable in reality.

Reminds me of a recent trip to Atlanta a few weeks ago. Was on I-275, the ring interstate around ATL, about to exit to hit I-75 to head home.

Traffic on the road, an 8 lane, was not light, not heavy, but moving steadily at around 75-80mph....and it's a 55mph road entirely.

Two exits from mine, come over a small rise and there's a cop lasering traffic. I look down to see that I'm doing around 78mph. Cop took no notice from what I saw...just sat there with his laser gun out.

Made me wonder just how fast one had to be going to get a ticket. Even the cops realize what the true speed of most roads should be.......
