I also think that people are too nice down here in the south at times. On the road I live on, sometimes people wait to get out of the gas station (I'm not sure why they don't get on the main road that my road intersects with and just do a u-turn...). Well, when our lights turn green, people will actually wait and let them out, but they don't realize it at first. I recall one time, this guy held up the line just to let two people out and the light ended up turning red after that. So essentially, he was "nice" and let two people out when maybe five to seven could have gotten through the light instead.
It gets confusing when people try to be nice like that at 4 way stops. If me and another car are approaching at the same time, I'll come to a complete stop while the other car comes to a rolling stop and there's no confusion about who should go first. Sometimes the other car will come to a complete stop as well. Oh shit. Oh goes first? A lot of people don't seem to know that the person to the right goes first, so that can get awkward where both cars inch forward then stop then inch forward then stop. I'd rather just wait and let the other person go, but sometimes they're thinking the same thing.

Heh, I like to call that the "New York Stop" since I don't think most New Yorkers stop at stop signs if you can clearly see there's nothing to actually stop for.
Everyone here does that. I did it as well until I got a $300 ticket for coming to a rolling stop at a stop sign. Now I do a full stop every time. People HATE me because of it.

On the highway you will get noticed by your relative speed to other traffic regardless of absolute posted limit. If everyone is going 85 in a 55 and you are the one going 95 and making multiple lane changes to get around everyone else, expect to be the only one getting a ticket.

the last time i had to take traffic school (taught by a retired judge) he told the whole class to keep with traffic around you, regardless of whether it was 10 over the speed limit. the chances of accidents goes up when youre doing 65 and the rest of the world is doing 78 and having to "dodge" you. i told him id bring him the ticket if i got one hehe.

My favorites are the ones who try to pace a cop in front of them or out run a cop behind them in the left lane and refusing to get over.

i did that one time, he had a buddy cop get on the freeway after me and pull me over. pissed me off, but oh well. my choice.

The only reason to go to 55 is to save fuel.
If it comes to pass that peak oil turns out to be a national emergency killing jobs productivity and trade imbalance as the US exports 1 Billion $ a day
I could see it happening

At the same time they would make cars with V6 engines illegal. We're talking about saving fuel, right?

Ok I have an idea. Raise the tax on gasoline then remove the speed limits from all highways. If you want to go 100mph and get 10mpg in a pedovan, that's up to you. If you want to get 60mph in a little shit car going 55mph, then that's fine too. Everybody wins.

Except you don't change consumption and still export hundreds of billions of dollars OUT of your economy. Thats why I said if its declared a national emergency and in the best interest of the nation. Driving has never been a right its a privelage

I got pulled over for doing 74 on the 405N in OC in the carpool lane. Traffic was moving at about 70ish. Irvine cops are probably some of the worst/most bored in the country.

Also cops on the stretch of 15 going from CA to Vegas, NHP car pulled over a yaris doing like 80 I would guess (I was going 78). Nearly shat a brick when he rolled up behind me. If youve driven that stretch of road before, its flat and straight for nearly like 40 miles.

What kind of car do you drive/were you driving? I drive that route at least once a month and I've never been pulled for doing 75mph.

it's amazing how more than 2 cars at an intersection seems to turn the majority of the population into complete idiots.

The problem is the "who gets there first" rule. Because of that, people fight over who gets there first or who gets there last then disregard the rule about person to your right going first.

new rule: remove all 4 way stops and put traffic circles everywhere. I've never seen anyone have a problem with those.

who gets there first causes issues because assholes dont actually stop, they cruise thru at 15 MPH tapping the brakes

Seems like it breaks down into 3 scenarios:

man and man:
both race to the intersection, neither stops, both dodge each other in the intersection

woman and woman:
both stop and wait for the other to go, nobody actually goes, both starve to death

man and woman:
woman stops, man doesn't, no problem.

Get rid of split speed limits also, making trucks go up to 20mph slower sucks.

Assume you mean tractor/trailer rigs...? Yea it sucks and what worse is having a CDL like I do also means any and I mean any kind of infraction like a broken tail light or tag light out or simple issue as such will put points on your record just like a moving violation... Texas just started this crap so even when your in a private auto you better be on your toes... Also a CDL mean NO defensive driving class to keep it off your record either which really bites @zz too... I will say though unless your doing something really stupid like this...

The state troopers around here will give you a break if you have a CDL and you just come clean and tell them you screwed up and not try to say "ah thats bullchit" I did`nt do that... I drive a company service truck so really watch what I do and just let the idiots have the road, same goes for my personal truck as well...

I've seen enough problems, and that's with just one well-used traffic circle near here. Encountered some old lady driving backwards. Have encountered a number of times when people stop instead of yielding, or people starting to turn the wrong way, or people entering without yielding. Heck, my DMV renewal sticker showed up last week with a pamphlet in it on "how to properly use traffic circles."

Thats the problem if you only have one cicrcle is they aren't common enough for people to get used to them.
Once you have a bunch they kick-a IMO

i hate when you get a light that is out. someone will stop, wait their turn, proceed through the intersection, and the moron behind them just goes along as well. happens all the time.

Be careful as shit when that happens. Sometimes people don't see that it's a controlled intersection and they just blow through it. I can't say I blame them; there are lots of intersections around here that don't have lights on the main direction but have a stop or yield going the other way. If you just see something holding lights but none of them are lit up, it looks a lot like a pedestrian crossing that only lights up when the button is pushed

Yes, I meant tractor/trailer. Glad I sold my trucks and don't have to worry about that crap anymore. Do miss travelling all over the US and Canada though.

My city has 7 of them and I love the heck out of them. They are not meant to replace a light controlled intersection, but more like an alternative to a 4 way stop.

4 way stops need to go. Seriously. In a traffic circle you can pass through without a problem when there's no traffic, or you stop at the entrance and wait to get in when there is traffic. With a 4 stop, you have no choice but to stop. Even if you're the last person on earth and there's no other car in the entire city, you still need to stop. Who invented such a retarded thing??

Apparently France has the right idea. Wiki says they have over 30,000 traffic circles. I'm guessing they don't have many 4 way stops.

The six speed in my GTO loves the highway. Faster the better. At 65 - 70 my rpms are like 1800 - 1900. Car gets 24mpg highway. Not bad for a 6.0 and a car weighing 3900lbs.

They have a large traffic circle where I used to live, and it wasn't awful to drive on, but there was almost always someone that didn't drive on it properly. I remember how my mom would always complain that someone in the right lane didn't turn off to a side street when they were supposed to and now she couldn't move over . It was made worse by the fact that you had to use this traffic circle to get from one side of a specific road to the other side (this road being used to go between two different cities). Eventually, they built an overpass. So now people that just want to go into the next city can keep going, but if you want to get on one of the smaller side streets, you use the traffic circle.

We also have a small traffic circle here. I rarely ever have to use it, but I don't think I've seen anyone use it improperly.

I think it might just be wise to have the federal government mandate specific parts that must exist on a driving test. For example, when I talk to people about my driving test and I say I had to parallel park (the first thing that you had to do), they usually say, "Oh, I didn't have to do that." I'd be willing to bet most of them don't know how to do it either . But the thing is, while the parallel parking can be a pain (I still prefer not to do it), the rest of my driving test was a joke. I literally drove around 3 roads that formed a diamond.

Some states may also want to add to the test for things that may apply to them more. I can't think of any good examples of what a state would add, but it'd make sense to allow it.

Everything exDeath said. The problem isn't with the speed limit. People are going to drive the speed they want to regardless of the limit. The problem is with the way people are driving. Being completely ignorant, and inconsiderate to the people around them.

I just want a big sign on my highways (I-75, I-285) that says "slower traffic move the fuck over." I don't really tail people anymore, just speed up and move pass them.

People are just dumb behind the wheel even when not on the 'road.' Yesterday I was pulling into a place, making a left turn so I was waiting in the median turn lane behind three other cars. We had to wait a minute or two for the traffic going the other way to pass before it was clear where we all moved in a line slowly because of a big dip right at the curb pulling into the place. So there's three other vehicles right in front of me as I pull into the parking lot, when some idiot kid and his two buddies driving across the parking lot come flying up and slams on his brakes and lays on the horn, as if we're suppose to stop in the middle of the road so he can drive past the entrance. I came to a stop because I thought he was about to t-bone me or the mini-van right in front of me. Meanwhile the cars behind me are stopped in the middle of the road while this idiot cuts between me and the car behind me as I started moving again, and then flips me off in the process.

I did a 180 right there and followed the fucker across the lot, started getting out of my car at the exit on the side street where he was waiting to get out, when he suddenly cuts around the person in front of him and takes off down the road. I was so pissed I followed his dumb-ass, and he turned into the feckin Police station a few blocks up the road to save himself from an ass beating by rolling his windows up and not looking at me. I was about to give the fat kid driving a lesson in driver courtesy.
