I just think that in some cases, people don't realize how something they're doing affects others. I made a guy at work realize how sitting in the straight+right lane can
really suck for the guy behind him wanting to turn right (on red). I know I've had to wait for 3 minutes or so behind a guy going straight (when he could use the left+straight lane) when the east-bound lane that I wanted to get into was nice and clear (west-bound wasn't).
Another issue I see a lot is people moving into the intersection. It gets really bad when someone does it and they end up blocking people in turn lanes that
would be able to turn if they weren't being blocked in.
I actually saw a pretty awkward thing today. I came to a 4-way intersection and the lights on the east-bound (the way I was going) and west-bound turned red. Well, the guys beside me in the left-turn lane decided they didn't want to wait the 10 seconds for them to get the green arrow, and they literally went after the light was already red. That just baffled me... I mean, the person behind them waited and literally had an arrow about 10 seconds later .
I also think that people are too nice down here in the south at times. On the road I live on, sometimes people wait to get out of the gas station (I'm not sure why they don't get on the main road that my road intersects with and just do a u-turn...). Well, when our lights turn green, people will actually wait and let them out, but they don't realize it at first. I recall one time, this guy held up the line just to let two people out and the light ended up turning red after that. So essentially, he was "nice" and let two people out when maybe five to seven could have gotten through the light instead.
I mean, I'm not a perfect driver. I'm a bit aggressive. I use the "New York Stop" (see below). Sometimes my lane changes can be slower than desired (I will sometimes ease into it) as I was taught to commit and merge quickly. Some people think I stop too closely to other cars at a stop light. They say, "well, what if someone rear-ends you?" I don't feel like living my life with a bunch of rare "what ifs" when I can be nice and make room for other people... especially during rush hour traffic.
One thing I need to start doing is using my horn more often. I need to let people know they're being idiots .
Irvine is the safest city in the USA per capita. I used to work for the PD when I was in college, it got really old hearing the code for "rolled stop sign" over the radio every 10 minutes on the streets surrounding the university.
Heh, I like to call that the "New York Stop" since I don't think most New Yorkers stop at stop signs if you can clearly see there's nothing to actually stop for.
