I mean that I wish the speed limit were 55mph, period. And everyone observed it.

I would be happy if people just learned to observe the current speed limits.

No, no, and no. The speed limits are entirely too low. If you want to do 55, fine, go right ahead, stay in the right lane, and don't move out of it.

I would be happy if people just minded their own business, stayed out of everyone elses way, and stopped power tripping over what other people are or aren't allowed to do when it isn't bothering anyone else.

By "bothering someone else" I mean when someone going 25 pulls in front of someone going 85 and expects the world to brake for them because they didn't want to wait their turn. Its the person going 25 who has failed to yield to faster traffic.

Two exits from mine, come over a small rise and there's a cop lasering traffic. I look down to see that I'm doing around 78mph. Cop took no notice from what I saw...just sat there with his laser gun out.

Made me wonder just how fast one had to be going to get a ticket. Even the cops realize what the true speed of most roads should be.......

Majority of cops don't care about absolute speed unless it's a special area where people are known to be stupid and cause wrecks, area where people have called in to complain, or something excessive like doing 60+ in a 35 with lots of side streets and blind spots, etc. If they are bikes specifically given orders to crack down on speeding, have fun

On the highway you will get noticed by your relative speed to other traffic regardless of absolute posted limit. If everyone is going 85 in a 55 and you are the one going 95 and making multiple lane changes to get around everyone else, expect to be the only one getting a ticket.

My favorites are the ones who try to pace a cop in front of them or out run a cop behind them in the left lane and refusing to get over.

Thats fine, that's what the right lane is for. Just be wary of the 85 mph speed limit in the left lane before you plop over going 45 in your Prius and start a pissing contest with a 8,000 lb truck going the speed limit.

Now that rings a bell...!

Just had it happen this past weekend while pulling a loaded 20ft. trailer minding my own bizz some idiot pulls right out in front of me with a tin can and never even sped up even though I was on the binders screeching tires and laying on the horn...? WTF...? This was in a 55mph zone too... I got up beside him and realized it was some geezer from like the civil war, he never even looked at me so I just gathered myself and went on about my way... Not his fault he made it this far and just glad I didnt take him out...

Majority of cops don't care about absolute speed .

I got pulled over for doing 74 on the 405N in OC in the carpool lane. Traffic was moving at about 70ish. Irvine cops are probably some of the worst/most bored in the country.

Also cops on the stretch of 15 going from CA to Vegas, NHP car pulled over a yaris doing like 80 I would guess (I was going 78). Nearly shat a brick when he rolled up behind me. If youve driven that stretch of road before, its flat and straight for nearly like 40 miles.

Raising the speed limits around here wouldn't do anything because nobody actually goes the speed limit. The big road between my house and my gf's house is mostly a 70km/h (44mph) zone, so I'll get up to that speed and set the cruise control. Without fail, I end up gaining on people. Why??? Just go the fucking speed limit. God damn it. The last couple miles of that road is a 90km/h (56mph) zone and NOBODY drives that speed. I'll gently accelerate up to that speed in the slowest car ever made in human history (corolla) and I'm still flying past people, going at least 20 faster than they are.

No my speedo is not broken. My GPS gives the same readout as the speedometer and it seems very unlikely that they're both off by exactly the same amount.

The cops might not care, but they're usually not the ones giving out the tickets in this area. They sit in fully loaded $50,000 trucks that automatically take a picture of cars going faster than X speed. This is how Canada bails out General Motors - buy the most expensive trucks possible then pay for them by handing out speeding tickets that may or may not cover the cost of the fully loaded truck.

I've started seeing a lot of cops just sitting on the shoulder with their lights flashing, but not pulling people over on parts on the freeway where everyone usually does 70+

Talk about lazy, lol

Good lord 55mph is slow on the freeway. Glad i was too young to drive before it became 65 here.

The 710 freeway in LA is half 55mph because of infinite construction. Think it just pisses everyone off though, cause even in #2&3 lanes people do 65+, and 75+ in #1. Other freeways I drive on, most dont go over 70mph on a good day even with a 65 limit.

Yikes, be careful. Where I live, drivers are required to slow to about 35mph when passing an emergency vehicle, and the speeding ticket is double if you speed past one. Going 70mph past a cop would be worth about a $500-$600 ticket. Of course it varies by state, province, country, city, etc.

Using the limited info you have provided, the logical conclusion from this statement is that you deem those cops the worst because they are doing their job.

:hmm:

I'm having to be very careful right now because I'm borrowing a car while mine is in the shop and it's speedometer isn't accurate nor consistent in its inaccuracy. It isn't off by a fixed speed nor by a percentage, it's more random. Makes things a little interesting.

Nope. The only thing unsafe are flocks of dozens of cars bunched up and unable to move because half a dozen oblivious drivers spread out doing 40 in a 55 and hell bent on claiming the road as their own.

Try as I might to stay in my lane and maintain a steady speed and avoid excessive lane changes, there are assholes in every lane with 15 cars behind and a mile of empty road ahead. These are also the people oblivious to their rear view mirror who slam their brakes at the last possible second and come to a complete stop to make their turn in a 45+ area, or occupy two lanes for half an hour as they ride their brake and drift into the left turn lane going 15 mph for three blocks.

These are the people that cause accidents, not the 15 people maintaining a constant 65+ who are alert and staying out of each others way. Tailgating and pile ups are caused by slow traffic, not fast traffic.

IF ONLY ALL DRIVERS WERE LIKE YOU!!!

Unfortunately, driving in this country is now considered a "right", so people don't give a shit about being a good and conscientious driver.

I'd like to add another kind of asshole to the discussion: the kind that's stuck behind the other kind holding up lane number one on a two-lane road who acts like he's about to pass on the right, but ends up merging into the right lane and traveling at the same speed, thus creating a wall of assholes.

Even better when they start having a pissing contest and speed up and slow down together

Pretty neat, but my car is horribly inefficient above 75mph.

It varies depending on the vehicle (efficiency, gearing, aerodynamics, etc.) and of course is a slope and not stepped. For instance your MPG doesn't drop from 30 to 25 with the difference of one MPH, but might go from 30 to 29.5 or something like that.

My car (2007 Mazdaspeed 6) has a 25MPG EPA rating for highway. It can get close to that going 75-80MPH. Going 65MPH, it can get higher (up to 30MPG). I calculated this a few years ago on a long road trip (WI to CO to CA to CO to MI to WI) by keeping track of fill-ups and mileage.

Edit - I actually support speed minimum laws, but all the ones I have seen are 15-25mph below the limit, and so are useless.

Not if the speed limit is 85MPH. Then, the minimum speed might be 65MPH.

Even the cops realize what the true speed of most roads should be.......

The true speed of a road should be what 80% of the cars are already doing on that road, as long as there are no safety concerns.

I got pulled over for doing 74 on the 405N in OC in the carpool lane. Traffic was moving at about 70ish.

Translation: You called attention to yourself by going faster than the flow of traffic.

I'm having to be very careful right now because I'm borrowing a car while mine is in the shop and it's speedometer isn't accurate nor consistent in its inaccuracy. It isn't off by a fixed speed nor by a percentage, it's more random. Makes things a little interesting.

Just go with the flow of traffic, and no faster. That usually does the trick of keeping inconspicuous.

In general, try not to lead the pack of cars. If there's a photo radar van on the side of the road, someone else will see it and slow down, and you just follow their lead to slow down. If there's a cop pointing the laser at cars, he'll likely be reading the ones in front.

Irvine is the safest city in the USA per capita. I used to work for the PD when I was in college, it got really old hearing the code for "rolled stop sign" over the radio every 10 minutes on the streets surrounding the university.

shit people pace a cop in front of them? I always wanted to try it but dont have the balls to be that close behind a cop going 85 lol.

A few times it was faster for me to accelerate and move over rather then take my foot off the gas and then move over.

This is in when an approaching cop car from behind with lights on and just needs to get by.

I drove right by 2 cops going 90 on a road trip 2 weeks ago, a mustang was trailing me doing 87-88. cops didn't bat an eye at us (we both thought we were fucked though)

Not the first time that has happened, I tend to agree if you are just rolling in your own lane and not just flying by traffic, you are generally okay.

I wish the federal 55mph speed limit would come back.

If you are serious about this post, then FUCK you. Seriously.

I remember when the federal limit was 55mph, and it was fucking miserable for everyone except for assholes like you.

I just think that in some cases, people don't realize how something they're doing affects others. I made a guy at work realize how sitting in the straight+right lane can really suck for the guy behind him wanting to turn right (on red). I know I've had to wait for 3 minutes or so behind a guy going straight (when he could use the left+straight lane) when the east-bound lane that I wanted to get into was nice and clear (west-bound wasn't).

Another issue I see a lot is people moving into the intersection. It gets really bad when someone does it and they end up blocking people in turn lanes that would be able to turn if they weren't being blocked in.

I actually saw a pretty awkward thing today. I came to a 4-way intersection and the lights on the east-bound (the way I was going) and west-bound turned red. Well, the guys beside me in the left-turn lane decided they didn't want to wait the 10 seconds for them to get the green arrow, and they literally went after the light was already red. That just baffled me... I mean, the person behind them waited and literally had an arrow about 10 seconds later .

I also think that people are too nice down here in the south at times. On the road I live on, sometimes people wait to get out of the gas station (I'm not sure why they don't get on the main road that my road intersects with and just do a u-turn...). Well, when our lights turn green, people will actually wait and let them out, but they don't realize it at first. I recall one time, this guy held up the line just to let two people out and the light ended up turning red after that. So essentially, he was "nice" and let two people out when maybe five to seven could have gotten through the light instead.

I mean, I'm not a perfect driver. I'm a bit aggressive. I use the "New York Stop" (see below). Sometimes my lane changes can be slower than desired (I will sometimes ease into it) as I was taught to commit and merge quickly. Some people think I stop too closely to other cars at a stop light. They say, "well, what if someone rear-ends you?" I don't feel like living my life with a bunch of rare "what ifs" when I can be nice and make room for other people... especially during rush hour traffic.

One thing I need to start doing is using my horn more often. I need to let people know they're being idiots .

Irvine is the safest city in the USA per capita. I used to work for the PD when I was in college, it got really old hearing the code for "rolled stop sign" over the radio every 10 minutes on the streets surrounding the university.

Heh, I like to call that the "New York Stop" since I don't think most New Yorkers stop at stop signs if you can clearly see there's nothing to actually stop for.

Well at least with the limit being ~70 most will drive between 80-90, so you can finally get somewhere.
