Hello all:

I must say that I am somewhat disappointed. I have been using a 1.4Ghz Tbird w/512MB RAM and GeForce 3 card and 60GB WD then 80GB Seagate for the last 3-4 years and finally upgraded to an FX-55, 2GB RAM, and SLIed 6800GTs with 2 74GB Raptors in RAID0 and a 400GB Seagate. General day to day usage is pretty much the same. Granted I have yet to try programs like Flash and Photoshop on my new machine but the general everyday computing is the same.

So just a word to the wise if you are not gaming or doing high end video/3d/photo editing and the like a high end computer will pretty much be useless to you. Load times for the OS are not that much better and the general feel is not that much faster. Am I the only one who sees it this way?

It almost never makes sense to buy a new system, especially an overpriced high-end system like yours, unless you have a clear need for it.

Even with just a 1 GHz CPU, MS Word spends 99% of its time just waiting for you to type something.

Question. Are you kidding? Why would you buy a system like that if you are not gaming? Photoshop and the other programs don't use SLI as far as I know. You have the ultimate gaming machine right now! I hope you do game for the money you spent on that bad boy!

Yup, that's why I'm still running on a 1.4 celeron. I finally upgraded to 900 mb of ram so I could run multiple users at once on xp. The only thing I'd like a faster processor for is ripping cd's, but the cd collection is already done, so I don't have to rip more than 1 or 2 at a time very often. I like KNOWING what's fastest though.

I didn't say that I did not do other things, I enjoy HL2 quite a bit and seeing it as it was meant to be played at 1600x1200 4xAA 4xAF all details and reflect all is something everyone should be able to see and play.

I'll take the Raptors too! I can use two more. Unlike you, I'll appreciate the speed.

I was commenting on how the everyday feel of a high end machine is not much different than a 3-4 year old machine that was high end back then. Just FYI for those who are making buying decisions.

I heard 16xAF doesn't do much in terms of graphics quality so there is no point in turning it on.

The PSU thread was pretty funny, but I don't think we need more comedy in GHW right now...

You guys are quite insightful now aren't you. I was saying that things like web browsing, e-mail checking, word processing, and the overall feel of a the everyday operation you do on your computer are not going to show an increase in performance with a high end machine.

I did not throw my money away. I do in fact play games and when i do I would like to play them at extremely high settings. When I had my old machine I was constantly frustrated that I could barely get to 1024x768 with out any AA or all the goodies. I absolutely hate jaggies. And so I went with a system which would erradicate these issues. On top of that I do quite a bit of work in Visual Studio and in design application such as the MX Studio and Adobe products such as Photoshop and Illustrator. These types of programs benefit greatly from a high end computer and as a result were another reason to "throw $$$ down the drain" as you say.

Thats funny, when I overclocked my Pentium 133 (with MMX) to 166Mhz by using the jumpers on my mobo I did notice quite an increase in felt speed. I think it will now be worthwhile to upgrade my Win 3.1 to something better.

why wouldnt you turn it on, your system could handle this easily, and even though it doesnt do much, it does something...
