Just because it works doesn't mean it is worth anything. Tuning system kernel parameters can be done on your own. Just go to a good performance tuning site and they will tell you what to do for free....

These kind of applications really don't help the normal user. The people who will benifit the most will be those with very large pipes but very high latency (ping time). This kind of connection is pretty much exclusive to satellite users (though FiSO and cellphone connections might also apply). Other, more common connections (like dial-up, cable, or DSL) can actually end up being slower by trusting these kind of "fixes". Now a days, Apple's default connection settings are geared tward /realiable/ broadband or LAN connections. By using software that "optimizes" these settings, you often find that your connection goes SLOWER because it is no longer reliable and things have to be sent multiple times.

For those who still think they need this "optimization" but don't want to spend money on an app that does something you can easily do yourself, here's a link on how to do it yourself:

And if this kind of tool is really somthing you need to work and work right, here's a company who tool allows you to play with individual settings to tune the application to YOUR network. It also allows you to see the effect it had on your network speeds (to see if your changes speed things up or slow them down). There's a free, full version 21 day trial. The website looks very /professional/. The company also lists their address and states that they are willing to give out a phone number if needed. All for the same price of PimpmyOSX.

Great way to build a positive image about yourself, insult 90%+ of the population here... And I'm sure quite a few have used Linux or Unix, and have never touched OS X. No one here should tolerate any member who shits on most of the userbase just to push a "hot deal". If I had Mod, this would have been already locked/banned.

Really appreciate a good, solid, informed post such as yours.

You did an excellent job of explaining in detail, what would be involved in tweaking the mac os for optimizing internet use for different connection types.

I fully understand the issues, and I applaud your well made points - And especially the work you put into providing alternate links for similar software - Very well done.

However, with my post I was only trying to provide the mac os x users with an easy to use one click install app. that I stumbled upon, that seems to work very well on several of my connection types - It improved all of them for me - It is not my program, nor do I benefit if someone uses it or not - The other programs you mentioned are certainly worth looking into - And I appreciate the heads up - We can all learn something from a knowledgeable & informed post such as yours - So thank you for your input.

All I did is post a simple solution for the average user to try regarding one easy way, that I happened to find, for helping folks out with their connection speed.

It actually took this long, and for someone such as yourself, to come along and talk about the issues rather than just throw insults - For that I thank you.

Others, have chosen to throw insults at me, impune my character, imply I'm a newbie without any knowledge... When all I waited to do provide a simple post for consideration of those interested - Just take a look at all the goofy remarks people made, sadly in retrospect, I guess a should have posted an online special on twinkies.

Did I post something inappropriate? - I think not.

After watching this forum for years, I don't think I've ever seen so much abusive thread crapping as I have endured here - But hey, at least I took the time to try to be useful to my fellow anandtech-er's - Sorry it wasn't too interesting or too helpful to the many who posted replies.
