So, I'm at a for-money subscribed website today and they have a few featured stories for their subscribers and one is about why you don't need a new computer and it turns out to be a plug for the titled EXE, which the page says is produced by these developers who are giving the thing away until tomorrow and hope to then clean up when people pay for it. The verbage says it will check out your PC and find things that slows it down and fix them.

So, I hit the link and it downloads. I'm naturally suspicious because most of these speed-up-your-machine utilities do squirrely things. In the past when I have run one it generally says it's found all this stuff that needs to be fixed and then asks you to pay $29.95 or something before it will do the deeds. Anyone have a notion on this one?

Bah! So I run it, it finds around 800 issues and I click the [Clean Now] button, it directs me to register it and it comes up with a page that indicates I get a $10 discount on the pro version (required to do anything) and the net price (expires today!) is $29.97, which is 2 cents more than my guess in the OP. That's just crap. The link at my paid-for registered site said it was free until tomorrow. Fuck paying for it, these cleaners always ask for money AFTER doing the scans. I think that's disgusting and I will not pay!

At the page I hit where I got it it said:

To me, that indicates I was not going to have to pay $$ to get benefit from this, to have it do its job. Is this not deceptive?

When I went to Uninstall a Program in Windows and initiated the uninstall I was directed to a web page where I was again offered to have the program registered, this time for a further discounted price of ~$19.95. It was then I called them up and I got a woman who spoke in a strong Indian accent and asserted that I got the trial version and would have to pay to have it registered to have it do anything. I complained that the come-on was utterly deceptive and I refuse to pay money in such circumstances. Eventually, the call terminated. I'm a little steamed, but not surprised. I have these deceptive software purveyance techniques.

ALL of those programs are malware, or at least totally un-needed. Forget they exist.

I have never given any of those folks a dime. I was upset because they said the damn thing was free and then they tried to shake me down, I called and gave them a piece of my mind.

Sorry, I don't know but usually anything with Speed, Fix, or Tweak in the name is basically a trojan or rogue utility (Freefixer aside) and this has two of those in its name

Gotcha, I knew that, but the way it was purveyed at the for-pay site I saw it at (for mucho money site!), had me wondering if they weren't lieing. Turns out they were. I'd complain but won't bother, the site's owners (where the link was, not the lousy utility's) are a little greasy, I know. :| Edit: I may as well say it, it's Investor's Business Daily's site.

You now know that the owners of that website are willing to lie to you for a quick buck. Perhaps you should reconsider if you can actually trust that website? Then consider if that website is actually any use to you if you can't trust the information you read there. So, maybe you should unsubscribe to that site and let them know why.

The only way we will see these websites stop scamming their customers is if we stop supporting them when they do.

Then consider if that website is actually any use to you if you can't trust the information you read there. So, maybe you should unsubscribe to that site and let them know why.

Now, it's arguable that they aren't completely full of shit when it comes to knowing about growth stock investing, and I suppose a lot of other angles on the investment scene. So, I'm ambivalent. Wm J. O'Neil was my introduction to the world of growth stock investing. I've already stopped subscribing to Investools...

Thing is, you can't expect everybody to be perfect. Sometimes you just have to tolerate some negative stuff.

The question is not whether they know a lot, it is whether they will knowingly give you bad advice if they can profit from it. Arguably that is what they did with this program.

There's no magic shortcut to speeding up a computer. You either have to replace hardware, or find/fix your software issue. Some random executable has no idea what's wrong with your computer, and any changes made will be blind, with no thought. It's more likely a program like that will make things worse. The only thing sped up is the user due to a lighter wallet.

This "tool" and many many others that that claim to; a. speed up b. clean registry c. solve driver conflicts have all been scams every time I've checked so far. Just google the program name with scam or virus after it in the future as a minimum check in the future.

The current Malware/ cleaners for me have been AdwCleaner and TDSSkiller available from http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/ Other driver or software problems are incident specific.
