is it ok to cut the 4 pin molex connectors on these fans and then just close them off with electrical tape?. I was hoping to plug them into my mobo and control them with speedfan, but the big 4pin molex connectors sort of get in to way.

No, don't do that. The 4 pin connector provides the power while the 3 pin connector only allows you to monitor the RPMS via the motherboard monitor. If you cut the red and black wires, then your fan will not be powered. Your best bet is to cut the black and red wire, crimp them with the small pins and place them in the 3 pin connector. Make sure you use a diagram that shows you the wire configuration, if you transpose the red and black wires, it could get ugly.

Edit: Changed minor details and typos.

the fan's can be connected directly to the motherboard without use of hte 4 pin connections. the connector actually starts from the fan -> 3-pin -> 4pin, making the 4pin the last in the line. I was assuming that since the 3 pin is being used, the 4 pin wouldn't be and it would be relatively safe to just cut them and then electrical tape

Well, I couldn't see from the pic you provided so I assumed that your fan is the same as many fans with the red and white wires in a 4 pin molex and the yellow tach wire in the 3 pin molex. Does the three pin connector have three wires in it (red, black, yellow)? If it does then you can snip away.

yes it does. i actually have 15 of these things so i decided to mutilate one and remove all its connectors and stuff. the cord goes from the fan then into the 3 pin, where its continued into the 4pin with the black connector splitting in 2.

i actually tried that... (i really wish i had a better pic to show you), but anyway they dont come off because they're molex connectors that allow you to put them into a series, so the back end is input and the front end is output -- in one little piece of plastic

The Molex and the 3-pin connectors are in parallel. So, you can use either to power up the fan.
You can cut the Molex and use electrical tape.
But, why? Just use the tape to tie the Moles to the wire and out of the way. Then, if some day you need it, you can still use it.

In other words, don't get rid of something that you do not need today. You may need it tomorrow!
