Spelling / Grammar / Punctuation on forums

I have noticed, repeatedly, many spelling, grammar and punctuation mistakes on forums all over the internet, including here at AnandTech.

What are your thoughts on this?

I am wondering - is it just because some people are very lazy? Or are some people actually too stupid to be capable of spelling and punctuating things correctly (or, mostly correctly - anybody can make mistakes)?

Although it is not too bad here, go to http://www.battle.net/'s forums, and read a few threads there.. sickening to say the least.

Some of the more common mistakes I notice, are the more simple (and perhaps done in laziness) ones, such as:

• To instead of too or two
• Of instead of off
• Were instead of where

And many more.

I was just bored, and decided to post something like this. Just so you know, I am not pointing fingers, this is just an observation.

Actually though, we leave that job to WombatWoman. She is tight with the grammar police, and I have seen her use her powers. It's a very scary thing to see, ugly in it's brutality. :Q

The reason I mispell words is because I don't know how to spell them. That shouldn't be too hard to understand. I don't see words very easily; I read slowly, one word at a time. When I look away, I don't see words. I can't see them in my head, I have no memory of how they look so I have to spell by sound, like mississippi. It's tough to do that with every word. I look the same ones up over and over, like dilema. Have no idea if it's right.

My short, sad tale: Those Grammar Police people found me. I was convicted of a 307 (improper use of special characters). They removed my semicolon, and for the rest of my life I have to punctuate into a rubber bag.

What I really hate though is when I read an online article/review that is full of grammar and spelling errors. Its these guy's jobs to know how to write.
