This is why mattress companies can rake you over the coals on prices, by convincing people of this fact. But you're not getting $2500 worth of value versus a simple mattress topper on top of a cheap mattress.

The entire mattress industry is a scam.

Makes sense to me. Don't like your mattress topper? Throw it out and buy 10 more, you're still out less money than buying one $2500 mattress.

I have had this attitude for awhile, once the topper gives out in about 4 years, buy a new one! oops another 100 bucks gone, big deal. Tempurpedic is retarded, their "grandbed" is like 7 grand!!! What a sham... I'm sorry but after spending a week on a real tempurpedic bed i wasnt impressed over my own bed with a topper, yes it was a bit better, but not more then 10 or 20 times the price better!

Congrats on having a perfect back.

It is not an achievement to congratulate, it is just the way it is. My comment is not intended to be a "hey, look at me" attention grab. It is an example different from the previous replies, especially those stating that a person spends X amount of time lying in bed and therefore it pays to spend a lot of money for something comfortable. When I am asleep, it does not matter what I am laying on. I have actually found a very soft bed to be difficult to sleep in.

A mattress is a lifestyle issue that only the individual can answer. This decision for an individual depends on many issues such as; personal health and medical status, length of expected use, level of daily physical exertion, relationship expectations, marital status, standard level of comfort the person is accustomed to, cost relationship to financial liquid assets, and more are all important considerations.

Mattress dealers are just one step below/above used car salesmen. Once I realized that, I never set my foot in one. The Sleep Train can blow the whistle on every radiostation they want, it doesn't change a simple fact that Macy's has the same mattresses for a fraction of the price with no haggling and no pressure, and regular sales on them to boot.

You come in, you try, you pick, they deliver - end of story.

Even though The Sleep Train was not too bad (but definitely on the shady side with the stupid selling techniques), the Mattress Discounters were the worst. I regret even stepping inside for a minute.

Do the mattresses differ? Of course. But the law of diminishing returns still works. I highly doubt that once you get past a 1.5k level for a queen-sized mattress there's going to be a world of difference for you to feel.

Everyone I have talked to that has bought one has been very happy them. Are they happy with them because they truly are or are they happy with them because they can't tell themselves they aren't because they already spent the money? Don't know. If I had the cash I would spring for one.

Ive had mine for almost 4 years now and the only reason why I plan on getting a new one is upgrade to a kingsize from my queen. I need a bigger bed so I can have some room when trying to sleep. My wife is small but when she sleeps I swear she turns into a 10ft monster.

When I bought mine is was to help my lower back pain. I had a compressed/herniated disc. It helped me sleep so much better than my spring mattress. Since I had my surgery over a year ago to fix this, I have been sleeping even better! I love my bed so much. Only downside is when you are getting busy... Its very hard to get some good leverage.

Bought my first ever expensive mattress set about 6 months ago. In retrospect, it was probably the best purchase I've ever made.

How do you get to 35 without knowing the difference between "your" and "you're"?

grammar nazi's are funny. i also know how to write in cursive very neatly, but i dont care if you can read it or not, so i scribble, same difference here.
if you can't understand what i'm typing or which your you're i mean. your problem, deal with it by skipping or putting me on ignore.

I got the 360 dollar memory foam mattress off amazon, its in every way shape and form better than my 1700 dollar mattress at home. I'm a total convert.

I spent that much on one. It was comfortable in the store. But after a few days, I took it back as it wasn't so good.

Guh, I can't stand those toppers. We've had one on our spring bed for a while, and I've been doing some bed/mattress shopping lately, trying out a whole bunch of different ones and those toppers suck IMO.

I definitely do like the tempurpedic mattresses, and there was one of the firmer ones that I found which was something like $1800 for a queen. I was quite happy with it and will likely get it sometime soon. Aside from it just being nicer, the things last forever.

I would say it's crazy if you haven't tried other brands and cheaper models first. I just had to get a new mattress but I started at the cheapest and worked my way up and took a lot of time to go around town to check on prices and various mattresses. For the mattress that I finally settled on, prices varied alot and I took the most basic model for that series since I did not feel that they higher up ones made any difference.

I found a deal for tempurpedic cloud luxe mattress set, queen size, for $2500. Would I be crazy for spending that much on a mattress?

Yes. Just get a soft pillow top.

I got a $600 vanilla Serta with a soft pillow top. No worries for me. The memory foam stuff is nice but way overpriced and totally useless. I've heard plenty of people say mattresses do dick all for back pain.

purchased a king novaform for 750 shipped in a sale from costco, it's nice. best part about memory foam is you dont feel your SO moving around and shifting or getting up.

after purchasing a pos pillow top mattress and getting raped for it at a mattress giant i vowed to never do something like that again.

I have the 10 inch version of this, Its seriously the best mattress I've ever slept on and I bought it from my phone with 3.99 next day shipping. Didn't have to deal with pushy idiots or anything, hell even the UPS guy helped me carry it up the stairs into my apartment.

I've slept on everything from shitty dorm mattresses with a topper to my like near 2k mattress at home, this is better than everything.

The question is whether or not you like memory foam mattresses. Some people hate them because you sink into them and you can get very hot. And that's fine. If you like them though, there's no reason to spend $2500 when you can get the same thing from the Amazon link above, or Costco has one for $5-600, or Walmart.com has one for $4-500.

If you don't like memory foam but like a firm mattress, then probably any mattress will do. If you like a nice plush pillow top mattress, buy a cheap mattress and put any number of different pillow tops on it. This is all the big manufacturers do, except that they sew the pillow top onto the mattress. Big deal. You can buy a 4 inch memory foam topper for $100 and see if you like the memory foam stuff.

I see no reason why $2,500 is not a reasonable amount to spend on a bed for the aforementioned reasons.

I anticipate that within the next 10 years I will research beds in depth with a practically unlimited budget. A $10,000 bed seems like a much better deal than a $20,000 car. I'm not necessarily saying something more expensive is better, but at that point I wouldn't sacrifice quality for a few lousy thousand dollars.

Brb updating chair thread.

$2500 is nothing for something you'll be sleeping on everyday for the indefinite future, no reason why you shouldn't splurge.

It's money well spent. Don't buy a mattress topper for a regular hard bed. That's a terrible waste of money and you'll just sweat on it, wear it out, and it'll cost you more money in the long run.

Be wise with your money though. Negotiate. Negotiate like it's your job. Negotiate until you've knocked a lot of money off that sticker price. That $2500 bed costs them a small fraction of that. Not sure specifically for Temperpedic but traditional beds that cost that much might cost them $600 so they are working on a huge margin.

Always buy good beds and good shoes. You can't go wrong.

Box Springs: I find them wholly unnecessary. Think about it: Presumably, you could put a box spring under your box spring for even more "give" and "support." Another box spring under those two. Where do you draw the line? Also, remember that box springs add significantly to your cost. One reasonable argument I heard for them is that they save wear on your mattress, but I had no way to prove or disprove this.

I thought I was the only one. I see no point in box springs.
