Spending time excercising might add years to your life but...

since you spend all this extra time excercising, you might not have a net gain... you might not be able to do anything more with them

All that time might be better spent developing deeper relationships with your spouse, family and/or friends.

True? or an excuse for fatties?

Excuse, while you exercise you could also be listening to podcasts or watching tv that you will already be watching.

exercising doesn't have to be lone activity.

What if you enjoy exercising? I walk to work and run home, which I enjoy, and it gives me time to listen to my podcasts and audiobooks, so it's also edifying.

You have 12,000 posts and you're worried about wasting time exercising??

I've always told that to myself. In fact, it will make you live longer, which means your elderly years will last longer. Those are the years that suck, where your back hurts, you can hardly see, you can't hear, you don't remember what you did with your damn glasses, and forgot your dentures at the bingo hall again.

With that said, I go to the gym anyway so at least now I can be in shape. I have not gone for like 4 months though since I bought a house and was too busy with that. I plan to start back in December.

One of my favourite Woody Allen quotes:

"You can live to be a hundred if you give up all the things that make you want to live to be a hundred."

I think its exactly the case, which is why I dont worry too much... Id much rather live 50 years and enjoy them to the max than drag away in 100 years of boredom

If exercising adds just 1 year to your lifespan... that's 8760 hours. If you exercised an hour a day, that's 24 years of exercise. 24 years of exercise of 1 hour/day would probably extend your life way more than a year so by that logic, there's a net gain.

I don't exercise much, but when I do its because I feel crappy from my sedentary lifestyle. Physical activity makes me feel good.

Exercise for it's own sake sucks. It's boring and tedious. You'd do better finding an activity that's fun, but also gives you a workout. White water paddling's a good one...

who gives a shit whether you spend time exercising or spending time with spouse, in the end there's no net gain because we all die

This. Even if it's just walking for a long while to podcasts/audiobooks. You can probably find some activity that's enjoyable and physically engaging.

Exercising regularly will result in living a longer, healthier life and will let you do the things you love later into that life than someone who doesn't exercise. The net gain is enormous.

Some people might not mind wasting away at 60/70... personally I plan on remaining active even longer than that. Move over Jack Lalanne.
