LOS ANGELES – Tobey Maguire's web-slinging days are behind him.

The 34-year-old actor and "Spider-Man" director Sam Raimi will not be returning to the superhero franchise next year. Instead, Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios announced Monday that a new "Spider-Man" film based on a script by James Vanderbilt that focuses on Peter Parker in high school would debut in the summer of 2012 with a new cast and filmmaking team.

The announcement of a reboot comes after reports that "Spider-Man 4" production stalled amid script revisions. The original "Spider-Man 4" release date seemed unlikely last week when Paramount Pictures announced that "Thor," another big-screen Marvel superhero adaptation, had hammered out the same May 6, 2011, release date as the fourth Spidey installment.

"Working on the 'Spider-Man' movies was the experience of a lifetime for me," Raimi, who directed all three "Spider-Man" films, said in a statement Monday. "While we were looking forward to doing a fourth one together, the studio and Marvel have a unique opportunity to take the franchise in a new direction, and I know they will do a terrific job."

Maguire said in an interview last week that there was "great stuff in terms of story and script" for the fourth chapter and the plan was to still release the film in 2011. He also said he had specific ideas about the evolution of the character on the big screen. Maguire's spokeswoman did not immediately respond to a request for comment about Monday's announcement.

"Thor" experienced its own upheaval over the weekend. Stuart Townsend departed the adaptation because of creative differences, according to two AP sources close to the production. Townsend, who had been cast as an ally of the Norse god, was replaced by Joshua Dallas.

The three "Spider-Man" films continually snared moviegoers, earning over $1.1 billion combined. After glowing reaction to the first two films, critical response to "Spider-Man 3" was so-so. Raimi said he was undecided about returning to the franchise after the third movie but later said he didn't like thinking about somebody else making the Peter Parker story.

Sony said it would have more news about the next "Spider-Man" movie in coming weeks.

Spider-Man 3 wasn't that bad. I guess the disagreements Raimi had with Sony over the direction of the new movie came to a head. There was an interview over the weekend where John Malkovich confirmed he was wanted for the movie (as the Vulture). Sony didn't want the Vulture as an enemy, and was forcing Raimi into accepting a Black Cat love interest.

But it sounds like it's going to be talking about Peter Parker not Spiderman. No one cares about Peter Parker.

Reboot already?

That shows how desperate the studios are to figure out what makes money.
Used to be remakes took 10-20 years to get going again. Now they take a few years. Eventually we will have two different versions of a franchise in the same year.

So are they doing another origin story?
Who knows, I actually enjoy origin stories more then the "badguy of the week" stories. I would not, however, enjoy seeing how spiderman deals with acne. If there isn't some sort of fighting conflict going on I don't want to see it.

/sigh - why don't they just do what they did with Smallville - just call it Spideyville.

This is Marvel Studios.
They are trying to rid themselves of the reputation the different hero brands had prior to Marvel figuring out just what exactly they wanted to do.

They rebooted Hulk, and they formalized as a studio to get the other Avengers characters their own origins stories.
Marvel is more or less focused on the origins. Likely looking to make the entire Marvel universe start co-existing across the various brands, which imho sounds like an epic concept.
I hope they do that with Spiderman, won't be avengers and I'm not exactly up to speed with the various Marvel properties, but I'm sure Spiderman did some kind of Avengers-esque mashup.

Here's to hoping this is more of the gritty presentation Marvel has been focusing on. Yes Iron Man was comical, but emo humor it was not.

I beg to differ D:

I didn't hate spiderman3. It definitely had it's bad moments but there was enough for me to like.

Really, a reboot for a franchise that was doing alright? Man Hollywood studios really won't risk money at all anymore will they.

THANK GOD! Spiderman 2 was terrible and 3 was total garbage.

They killed off Harry Osborne (stupid), when he deserved his own movie as a villain. Venom wasn't even utilized properly (and cast horribly) and Sandman didn't even act like a villain.

Raimi was going to use Vulture (Malkovich) in Spidey 4? That would have been a fvcking disaster. It isn't bad enough that he ruined the franchise, he wanted to bury it too?

I'm glad Raimi is gone, Dunst is a horrible actress, and Maguire was just awful in Spidey 3, plus he is getting old.

I actually aplaud Sony.....yeah, I know, I never thought this day would come.....
