And I think that not all spiders have 6 eyes, or however many they have. Could be wrong, but I believe some(most, all?) Salticidae, or Jumping Spiders, have two predominant forward facing eyes, and two off to the side..

Jumping Spiders have the best eyesight of any spider.. they can actually see and stalk their prey from something like 8 feet. :Q

I just saw a jumping spider pounce a small dead moth that's been stuck on my wall for a few months now.

It crept upt to it very slowly, then when it reached about one inch from it, it just jumped at it. You couldn't even see it jump because it was so fast, it looked like it just teleported there.

Then it was all over the moth for about 20 seconds before it found out it was dry, and left.

Thank's lirion.

More specifically: do the extra eyes provide better sight? Are they there because they are often damaged and need backup? Is it because they can't see well with only 2? Etc.

The simple answer is that no one knows. Most spiders don't rely heavily on vision at all. They sense vibrations to know when prey are near, and use chemical cues for courtship and mating.

Jumping spiders and some lynx spiders and a few others actually have very good vision, and these have been studied extensively. But about the rest there just isn't a whole lot known for certain.

Ah, bingo. Doesn't seem all that benificial it seems

Squint hard with one eye, and he looks like the father from orange county choppers, with sunglasses on.

maybe the same reason why flies see things.

Flies see things separated by many many "honey comb" shaped cells. THey can see movement much easier by one thing moving between cells. The movement senses lets them fly away before ur hand squashes them

Read an interesting article about flys. Seems their nervous system operates at a higher freq than ours (overclocked?) so in a room with flourescent lights, for them its light, dark, light, dark.
There is also a video on the web of a jumping spider ambushing a bee from the next flower over. Creepy.
