Darn it! I got in on the $140 WD deal... ahh well, I'm still wanting to build a power miserly file server, so the WD drive should knock off 3-6W or so.

I cant find direct information from Samsungs site, but it looks to be 3 years from most sources. Though some other store sites say 1 year, I suspect its an assumption because most other products have 1 year warranty's.

Im on the fence on this one. The Samsung is faster in most respects than the AAKS, with twice the cache. But you lose 2 years warranty, and some of the reviews seem a little concerning.

Course, the WD drive ive had for a year and a half just crapped out, so it would be nice to try something different.

This sounds like a great price, but honestly, after reading some of the reviews on this and the 1TB model in the same line over at NewEgg , I'm a little hesitant. A lot of people seem to say that it fails fairly quickly, and that there isn't even mention of it on Samsung's website (I couldn't find it either).

Does anyone have any direct experience with this drive? Are these failures just from the way NewEgg packages their OEM drives? In short, can anyone reassure me that me buying this drive and using it as my OS (and VM) drive is relatively safe? I've had such good luck with Seagate drives over the last few years that they are all I buy now. But if this drive is very fast (and cheap), as long as it is reliable I'm all for it.

Thanks!

Interesting that you got the link working. You spelled chiefvalue wrong in your link text and left out the www in the Http section. This is the first working CV link I've seen on AT..lol!

After reading the reviews, this seems to be an excellent choice in an HTPC for the boot and PVR/DVR drive. It only consumes a couple of watts more than the WDC GP drives, but the performance is significantly higher. The 32MB cache will definitely help when recording multiple HD streams.

1TB drives should come down in the near-future since WDC now has 320GB platters. However, it's at least a $100 difference to jump from 750GB to 1TB at the moment ($.40/gb!), so this is a definite sweat spot now (I haven't seen any $89.99 500GB drives since Christmas).

CV would not honor the coupon code for me

I just purchased this drive from Chiefvalue.com a few minutes ago. To use the coupon I believe you need to sign up for an account. If you go above the $140 threshold the discount becomes $7. Thanks to the OP for a great deal. I couldn't resist, especially after seeing the mostly lackluster performance reviews from WD's new 320GB platter drive.

Ordered yesterday and already received the HD, gotta love having a NE warehouse in NJ...ground shipping is 1 truck and a few hours on I-95. Haven't fired it up yet as I need to make room for it in my 900, but I can describe the packaging for those concerned about it.

It came in an ~8"x10"x5" box filled with styrofoam peanuts. The drive itself is encased in a hard plastic casing with half-spheres protruding to give it some impact resistance. This was all wrapped in standard bubble wrap, about 2 layers around the drive. When I received the drive, the bubbles were popped on one edge of the drive, which isn't ideal, but there was still the plastic casing protecting the drive. Overall the packaging is good but they should really use a smaller box or something to stabilize the drive so that it can't shift around in the box.

Will update once I install it to make sure its not DOA.

Except we don't want tinyurls here since you could link to anything and we can't see what it's going to. Please do not use them. Thanks.

Chief Value

Edit: WTF

www.chiefvalue.com

I don't know if there's a different story for chiefvalue, but the stores I know about that have been censored had it happen for spamming our forums.

is the 2 year hit on warranty worth the extra cache??

5 year seagate vs. 3 year WD?

you'll almost never want to pay attention to specs on a hard drive, instead you'll want to look up online reviews from trusted sites if performance is your primary concern (whether it be speed, noise, band for buck...)

as far as warranties go, most users aren't going to notice or really care about the performance difference between different drives. Seagate doesn't really make the most impressively performing drives however they tend to have a favorable reputation when it comes to reliability and when you combine that with their 5 year warranty you'll get a lot of users who like to buy their drives just because they know they'll be covered should it ever die on them.

look at it this way:

if you only plan to have one drive you'll want to make sure you're covered, so a longer warranty might be a priority for you

if you run multiple drives you might make sure to get a very high performing drive (or set of drives for RAID) to install your OS/apps on and from there you add on more drives for storage...again, since those drives most likely do not really mean as much to you as far as performance goes, warranty might play the most important factor in knowing you're guaranteed to have that amount of storage space available to you for that amount of time.

So, my Sammy Spinpoint arrived today. I'm posting this from it right now actually - just finished cloning my OS onto it. Unfortunately, I forgot to check the option for fast formatting for the other partition, so I'm stuck waiting for Windows to format it so I can clone my data too.

I'm hoping to run HD Tach/HD Tune on it when I'm finished up. Just ran the semi-useless Vista "experience rating" benchmark on it - Vista seems to like the new drive at least, and gave it the max score of 5.9 (my previous Seagate rated a 5.2).

It is pretty quiet (silent at idle, pretty quiet during seek). It seems to lack that distinctive "zzz" buzz/whirr that both of my Seagates have.

So far so good. Thanks OP !

I think the Coupon, above, is expired as I get "Sorry, the coupon code is not within the valid time period" when I try to use it. SIG

Ok, so what happens with the extra space that is not used? I assume that since this is an F1 it uses 334GB per platters. 334/750 = 2.25. So roughly 75% of one of the platters is unused, or the drive is only able to read 75% of each platter. If the latter is the case, I would guess the these are 1TB drives that had failures on them? Or perhaps a custom firmware could open them up to 1GB? No idea, just throwing it out there.
