This is the nearly undisputed champ in 750gb-1tb ATA hdd arena atm, combining superb speed with unmatched quietness (at least until hitachi releases their refreshed version soon). Perhaps the low price is just the refection of 750gb's replacing 500 variants at the mainstream spot, but arguably this is the best ATA drive you can get for money so why wait. I am kicking myself in the head for ordering a recertified one for slightly more just yesterday its just a few dollars' difference but a non-recertified one would have been nice. Oh well.

Spinpoint F1 HD753LJ 750GB
CV has it for $5 less using their coupon or, you could bump it up to $140 to use the $7 coupon. To my knowledge, we cant post a direct link to CV's site so I will leave it up to you to navigate there.

the only caveat is somewhat alarmingly high failure rate on arrival, though I believe it has to do with newegg's packaging job on OEM hdds - should be same regardless of whichever brands you happen to order; I have seen similar concerns for hitachi and wd drives when dealing with OEMs.

edited for replacement of referral link with direct link.

You can say that again. The egg has been doing a horrible job packing ANY OEM drive. They don't seem to care, since they do not lose any $ from it. The only one who loses out is the person who bought it, having to pay for S&H again...and again...

Awesome! Thanks for the heads-up, this was the drive I was waiting for although I almost snagged the Hitachi 1TB for ~230 after MIR from NE. I've had some bad experiences with NE OEM HDDs as well in the past but I really need the storage.

You're fine, you won't lose any performance as single 7200 rpm drives haven't even exceeded ATA133 performance specs yet.

You will not lose out on anything - modern hard drives still cannot break 100megabytes/second transfer rate in the outermost (fastest) areas.

You could be running ATA/100 and still not see a speed hit

There is a VERY small chance that a SATA/300 hard drive may be incompatible with a SATA/150 controller, which is why SATA/300 hard drives have a SATA/150 compatibility jumper, which forces the drive to operate in SATA/150 mode, compatible with temperamental older controllers.

I don't think this has ever been explained either. Doesn't make much sense since they're the same company.

I've heard that Vista really only runs well with hybrid drives--is this a hybrid, and if not, when will those be available?

What in the world is a hybrid drive?

Edit: I just Wikied it.
"At the moment, they [hybrid drives] are only known to be fully compatible with the Windows Vista operating system."
Isn't that the opposite of what you're thinking of? It doesn't say that Vista is only fully compatible with hybrid drives.

well, some of the more modern drives do break 100 MB/s.

of course, they won't break 150 MB/s sustained. however, their burst speed should break that.

so it might make sense to be running SATA300 if u have a sata300 drive. but in mustangsvt's case, i dont think the extra expense of a new controller would be justified just for burst speed.

I think you need to register to use the code, but you can register and use the code immediately.

So mixed reviews on this drive, depending on where one reads.
Along with "combining superb speed with unmatched quietness", does this drive run cool?
