Last year on consumerist, Spirit was voted second worst company in America, just behind Comcast. Now that is saying something.
Went to Tampa from Canada with 3 buddies for a 1 week golf trip last year. My buddies booked spirit for cheap. I said no fucking way and booked Westjet. I would get there an hour ahead of them so I would pick up the rental car and meet them at the Spirit Terminal.
Of course the cheap flight required them to drive across the border from London, Ont. to Detroit. 2 hours. When they got there they were told the flight was cancelled. they had to get a Hotel for the night and pay for a United flight in the AM. Lost a day of the short holiday and it ended up costing them $100 more each than I paid for my flight direct from the local Airport.
I fucking drove around in circles at the terminal pickup area for 2 hours (no one would let me stop and run inside) until I parked 1/2 mile away and walked to the Spirit arrivals and got on a phone where they told me the flight was cancelled. I was not pleased with their choice either.

You're too nice. I would have told those cheap bastards to get their own car at Detroit avis and been golfing.

Why the fuck didnt they call you and tell you about delay? You sure these are friends?

Thats horrible. Every airline is becoming shit compared to southwest though. No extra fees and 2 50lb bags.

Pretty much this. Any US based airline is shit compared to Southwest. Virgin, Singapore(heck any Asian based airline), Luftansa, all beat the hell out of them. At least last I checked.

Southwest isn't always my first choice, but they are good. Their planes are sometimes on the small side in seating.

Yeah cant really compare Asian and especially Saudi air or Emirates air. Different world no labor laws etc. I mean US airlines though.

I flew Sun Country a few months ago. It wasn't bad although I did go first class both ways.

I'm flying Sun Country again in February. I fucking hate airplanes but being at the front of the plane sure makes me feel better.

Did I mention I fucking hate flying?

WTF is all the fuss about? Damn near if not all airlines have a baggage fee. A lousy $2 is a bargain compared to some. The airlines are losing money and this is how they recoup. Don't like it charter a flexjet. LMAO!

And then there is the fees for carrying on luggage. I hate being nickeled-and-dimed - I'll never fly on Spirit.

I pack what I need in my cpap bag. It's very spacious and I can put all kinds of stuff in there for a day or two. By law, they have to allow me to carry it on as well.

You think those cheapskates had international roaming minutes? Not a chance. They emailed their wives from the Detriot Hotel wifi and their wives emailed me the new flight info.

If you can get email on your phone you can check spirits website that gives flight status information.

Pretty sure this was the airline whose CEO said a year or two ago that he didn't give two shits about customer complaints because his airline is the cheapest. "If they want service, they should go somewhere else and pay more" was the mantra. I seem to recall it coming up because someone wanted to refund their ticket because they became terminally ill or something, and the airline to him/her to pound sand.

This. The airline is run out of a run down strip mall. They cheap out as much as possible and make no apologies for it. They know they have the "walmart effect" going for them in that people will keep coming back regardless of how shitty a place it is...because the price is so low.

I literally can't fit in their seats because my legs are too long. For that reason alone, I will never fly them again.

I feel lucky living in Minneapolis. The worst delay I ever experienced was last Fall flying on Southwest due to massive thunderstorms in Milwaukee. Otherwise most flights leave on time. And with Delta in town and other smaller carriers going out of Humphrey terminal there is always a non-stop to any city I fly. Humphrey is also nice because it takes literally a few minutes at peak time to get through security since it only serves small carriers and doesnt have as much traffic.

:hmm: How often do you two fly? I am guessing not much as I fail to see how other airlines are shit compared to Southwest when, over the last YEAR Southwest has had the worst on time arrival rate of any major US airline. I cringe any time I have to book a flight with them that's anything other than the first flight of the day. In January less than 60% of their flights landed on time. Not that their management took the hint. They just blamed the weather. Yet - oddly - Delta who operates major hubs in DTW and MSP did not seem to suffer form the exact same weather patters. Weather. Sure. Thats why your customers are so pissed off that you finally got the hint that we don't like running through airports to make our connections and started making changes after 8 months of shit operations.

Oh - and to make matters worse Southwest has no inter-line agreements so when you are delayed your problem is compounded. If you get stuck on Delta\United\US\AA then they can get you out on a flight on another airline if its possible. My Air Canada flight got cancelled so United got me on a British Airways flight to London. Thats not even the same alliance!

If you fly Southwest you are at their mercy even if the next flight they can get you on isn't for 4 more days. (Happened to me in PHX. Flight cancelled. Next available flight they could put me on was in 4 days. Ended up flying to Columbus and driving through a blizzard to Michigan)

There are things I really don't like about Delta (FF program, not really friendly) but Southwest could learn a thing or two about airline operations from them

SW seems to fly about 400 miles in any segment. This puts a lot of pressure on their scheduling. All it takes is one of those segment stops to get delayed to send the entire chain into a frenzy. I lost interest in SW awhile ago because their fares are as expensive or worse than Delta or Sun Country and especially Spirit. But they require me to stop 1-3 times to any destination I want to travel.

They can't undercut the other airlines as much now that a lot of the beneficial fuel hedging is gone, so naturally their pricing is more in line with the legacy carriers for service that is now (in many cases) actually worse. Southwest has accumulated a loyal following though over the years though.

I flew Delta a few times this year to MSP, I was very pleasantly surprised with how far they have come with their service. If they had a reasonable FF program and a hub in a city I lived in they wound be my preferred carrier.

Oh yeah when their fuel hedging contracts ran out they lost a competitive edge. Just today I am pricing out airfare to Dallas from MSP for labor day weekend. Sun Country is 216 with taxes on a non-stop flight. SW is about 300 with multiple stops.

Do you fly much? Three hours late at best for many flights is like winning the lottery.

Pretty much this. I've been delayed nearly 8 hours because there was a nail in the tire of the plane I was supposed to be on and they had to fly in one. Sad part was, this was for a flight that was less than 2 hours... I could have driven there in the time I spent trying to fly there.

SW hasn't been the cheapest (or anything close) in a while.

I remember when I went to Montana at age 7 and hopped on my first air liner. And then I did it again at age 10 when my mother took me to Florida for Disney World. I remember it as being a pretty pleasant experience. Sadly it seems ever since the 2000's I hear absolutely no good things about flying on an airplane ever.

Sadly they are called Sky Pesos for a reason. So many miles so few good uses for them

SW hasn't been the cheapest (or anything close) in a while.

Depends on the routing. I fly Southwest as much as I do because their routings are the cheapest option I have

Since January they have been the cheapest way for me to get to:
Chicago
DC
Nashville
Orlando
Punta Cana
Cancun (well Spirit was but no. Just no.)
Phoenix
San Jose
