ok , heres a mad thought.......

some crazy hacker/programmer/nutter/uber nerd , oneday writes a program that becomes self aware. ie ,a true concience, selfaware , alive like you and me...
Then being a hacker/programmer/nutter/uber nerd , he lets it loose on the internet.
Also this idea is obviously set in the future where our home pc s have terrabytes.
Now as l understand it from here it can get really complex , ie , it decides to place a cloned copy of its own concience in our personal pc s , to ensure its survival.
Now you or l wake up in the morning to find the pc we payed alot of cash for has decided to remove your admin rights and render your key board useless...It believes the hardware support is now part of its body, thus its own.

any thoughts ?

yea yea l probly need less beer...

it wouldnt make any difference for the average user. im sure there would be ways around it so you could format and eventually there would be a way to block it.

however, it would negatively effect things such as military and government computers, causing a massive problem IMO.

Interesting thought you have there: the first true AI would be a worm or virus. Would the original human programmer even be necessary? Do viruses have security holes? If so, there are enough floating around out there that they could randomly interact; one virus attaches itself to another, then to a worm, which infects multiple computers at its own will... and boom! AI. Digital evolution... But as long as my computer can't plug itself in, I should be safe. ;-)

Yes, I am joking. I hope, at least.

Splat,
The only real flaw with your scenario is that a sentient AI would need a knowlege base, not just a logic engine. A HUGE knowlege base - one that is big, noticeable, and would be well beyond the abiltiy and hardware (figure petabytes of storage) for a home hacker. WAY before that is possible, the military and researchers would be building them, as they have access to those kind of resources.

Secondly, for the AI to become a worm it would either require it's KB to travel with it, or be remotely connected. The first seems a bit much - I'm sure any antivirus package would notice the arrival of a few petabytes of KB. And if it is remotely connected - well then by shutting off net access then the AI is dumb. Or at least dumber (I suppose it could take a subset of it's KB with it, perhaps that used for self-replication and defense). But then you are facing a much degraded threat. Once you get to that stage, I recommend Symanntec's standard anti-AI ware, or there are some good freeware progs available at 3cows.com

true intelligence is so complex its hard to worry about. how would it even evolve to use pcs? imagine someone just turning off/reseting/erasing just one part of your brain to get their property back. we can't even truely simulate bugs yet

lets just say someone does have a home pc w/ a massave storage system. and that this self aware worm would be able to move all of itself togather undetected. you would still need a hacker that understands consciousness enough to replicate it.

sure we can make ai that will do X action when Y happens. but how could you possably make an artificial consciousness.

humans, for as advanced as we think we are dont know squat. you have some brain surgeon pokeing around some part of your brain trying to get some desired responce. we dont even know why we need sleep.

i dont think you could ever teach a person how another person truely thinks. its out of our relm of comprehension. we will never truely understand how the universe works because we cannot remove ourselves from it to study it unbiased. same goes w/ the mind. we will never understand it to the fullest because we will never be able to take ourselves out of the expairment. we would need some kind of supermind or some evolved more advanced mind to understand this one. and by that time who cares how we think now anyway?

The beauty of User Mode is nothing can touch the hardware directly. Kind of a glaring flaw in your example, that.

Umm, I don't know who you have been studying biology under, but a worm, virus, or any future "self-aware" program wouldn't be conisdered life.

life beyond carbon is not possible is it , or is there just a chance silicone could live ?

Way to go off topic in your own thread. BTW, its silicon, not sillicone for life forms.
