Spooky films to watch this Halloween?

I want something genuinely spooky, which is a tall order for adults. Or at least entertaining/quality films with thriller/suspense aspects.

28 Days Later & 28 Weeks Later are awesome, too bad we've seen it. I assume other zombie flicks haven't aged well. Unless you strongly insist on a few.

The Mothman Prophecies was excellent. It still gives me chills. It's not some lame slasher- but geniuney mess you up psychologically.

What's good out there? I guess I don't mind slashers either as long as it's quality.

Looking at this list, is the original Exorcist (1973) and Poltergeist (1982) still good to watch today? Aged well?

Check out Threads. Definitely the best horror movie I've ever seen. Warning: also very depressing and brutal.

The original Poltergeist is always a good bet.

Agree with this.

The original Halloween is still my favorite scary movie I think.

I also love the Dawn of the Dead remake that came out a few years ago. Most modern "scary" movies just kind of suck.

Genuinely spooky is hard to do.

I still like the Original Exorcist myself, many downplay it as being lame but my wife still won't watch the thing.

My father was a jokester all his life, I remember he and my mother went to see it when it first came out and people where literally walking out of the theater at the time that could not take it.

The first time I watched it was by myself in the dark around age 16, I finished it and was walking to my upstairs bedroom at the time in the dark and he was hiding just outside of the kitchen by the stairway going up and jumped out behind me and "ARRRRRGHHHHHHHHH" I think I hit about 4 stairs going up to second floor while he was about laughing to death We tried to find his remote control red eye flashing rat to walk up the aisle at his funeral, but didn't till afterwards

Hellraiser ? I haven't watched those in awhile myself, might dig a few of those out here.

Phantasm was an old oddball one, or Argento stuff like Susperia.

i agree with both of these, althoguh i don't find either of them scary at all. but halloween is great, the sound is incredible in it.

i also agree dawn of the dead is a great modern horror movie. it's not really scary, but it's just good.

i also think the texas chainsaw massacre remake (the one with jessica biel, not the newest remake) was also very good.

also a huge fan of the hills have eyes remake.

Most horror movies are pretty bad in all honesty.

I remember watching the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre when I was about 14, and that movie scared the crap out of me. I still think that movie is genuinely scary, maybe in part because of the low production value. It just gives the movie a really weird and creepy vibe.

people talk about hellraiser like it's on halloween, nightmare on elmstreet, and friday the 13th's level. it's not even close. it's some crappy b-movie that just has a cult following i guess.

oh one more that i really like is Devil's Rejects. House of 1000 Corpses is okay but it's kind of odd.

Event Horizon.
John Carpenters The Thing
Alien

And those dissing Hellraiser. F YOU! lol. All horror movies are B movies with or without cult followings. Some just have more than others. You could say it hasn't aged well but then most don't. I could see if you didn't see it back when it came out how you might not get it now. It is indeed weird. On the flip side, I never considered Friday the 13th / Halloween at all scary.

Poltergeist I still love, but I've seen that people who haven't seen it back when it came out think it is a bit dated and not that scary.

The Descent is a good one to watch if you haven't. Tense and has some scary moments.

Another vote for The Conjuring.

The Exorcism of Emily Rose is pretty good as well.

Mama is decent as is The Pact.

Devils Rejects is a great movie, but it is more on the brutal level, than horror level. House of 1000 corpses tried to be horror/weird horror and while I like Devils Rejects better, I think House of 1000 corpses is a better scary movie.

Oh man, I LOVE The Thing. That's just a damned good movie regardless of genre.

I found House of 1,000 Corpses disturbing. I had a hard time sleeping after that one. I never watched The Devil's Rejects, mainly because of that.

I liked that one too.

Exorcist i think is still a good one.
Prince of Darkness to me is one of those not really scary but give me the creeps movies.

The Mothman Prophecies I also like, had been mentioned so I left it alone.

I'd forgotten Prince of Darkness, that was pretty cool in it's own way. Alice Cooper camo

I have trouble even thinking of anything that really creeps me out these days, to be honest Pet Sematary
when Gage comes at his mom with the scapel
just always made me more uncomfortable than many slasher type of flicks.

Stephen King always seemed hit or miss on who did his movies, and I read a lot of his books growing up, but for a reaction that one always got me a bit.

Was pretty much a rip off of "The Monkeys Paw", but still.
