Anything out there you guys recommend? I was thinking VW GTI (MK5) or BMW E46 M3. Mileage around 50k with a wagon or hatchback setup would be best, but a large boot can be considered. I do all my own work so euro's don't scare me away. I also want some kind of paddle shifting dual clutch transmission since this car will be driven on a near daily basis. I already have a manual car so none of that "don't be a pansy and get a manual" bit.

the 1st gen VAG 6spd DSG wasn't known for its reliability. Don't know about the BMW dct though

Is the DSG that bad in the 06-09 models? I did have a friend have his replaced with a '10 version and hasn't had a problem since, but iono. I'm sure he doesn't drive it hard so why it was replaced worries me.

No. Its not bad at all. There are still a FEW issues with some jerky shifts, but any DSG having the problem is basically granted a 100k mile warranty on the DSG.

I've had no problems with my DSG since they replaced the computer

^ Great to know about the extended mileage warranty! I read into the S tronic system that Audi uses and it appears it's their 2nd gen 7-speed system that is more reliable. I'd dream of an Audi S4 Avant, but yeah I'll keep dreaming.

DSG is still relatively new and longevity is questionable. Replacement is $$$$.

Touché. Still new, but I'm glad VW/Audi stepped it up with the additional warranty. At least, to my knowledge, it's not a sealed unit like Mitsubishi's TC-SST in the Evo X MR and Lancer Ralliart. Whole tranny has to be replaced at a cost of $10k per unit.

There have been quite a few that are already beyond 200k. They've been out for almost 6 years now, its not like they just came out.

Nope, it is not a sealed transmission. The biggest problem they were having was with the computer controller (mechatronics unit); to fixthat basically just had to drain the transmission and replace it.

What do you guys think of the Audi S4 (B5)? The V6 Bi-turbo is tempting. I'm not sure what kind of auto tranny is in that though. Don't mind the B6 or B7, but the cost on those probably exceed well beyond $15k.

That had a standard (torque converter and no paddles) automatic with "tiptronic"

The ZF-branded auto's are pretty tough stuff or so I hear. Newer usually always beats older for me. Keeps the mileage down as well.

Yeah, the ZF transmissions are great. However, they wont have paddle shifters on a B5 (atleast none i've seen/driven)

As for a GTI, there are plenty within your price range. Look locally, and on some VW forums, you'll find a bunch probably

Heard the turbo's are like glass and will blow when chipped as well as the whole motor needs to be pulled when conducting maintenance on it.

If I were to get a M3 it would be DSG. I already have two manuals, I would just want it for a peppy comfy sport lux cruiser. I do enough gear rowing on the T56 in the Cobra to more than earn the right to drive an "auto". I don't know why people fuss about DSG, it's a true manual gearbox, just automated when you want it to be. Not like it has fluid coupling and planetary gears.

Nothing pansy about being tired of playing speed racer in 1 mph rush hour traffic on a daily basis, especially in anything performance oriented with a heavy clutch that only knows 0 mph 15 mph and nothing in between.

My friend had an 08 or 09 GTI, tranny was the DSG one, it broke twice. It needed to be replaced 1once, the other time I believe it was the comp.

How did it break? Ive never actually seen any reports of them just breaking.

The only stuff ive seen is an issue with a few hard shifts, which has been pretty much resolved

2004 GTO - interiors are very nice.

350HP and 4spd auto that is quite stout - easily & cheaply modded for more HP.

Benz CLK430 - ensure you get the sport package

Volvo C70 - ensure you get the HPT

Audi TT - ensure you get the HPT

Porsche Boxster - late 90's models are dipping into the $teens

no clue, he does not even race it or anything either, which was odd. Might just been a fluke.

What about an RX-8? Its not a DSG/CVT, but it does have the paddle shifting if so desired.

'07 G35 Sedans have an option for paddle shifting IIRC.. though its something you'd have to add yourself.

Yeah, from what I've read if it failed it was covered by the 100k extended warranty, or it was due to people not doing 40k service (fluid and filter change).

Correct, and it didnt even have to fail. It just had to start misbehaving. Conveniently, mine failed right at 40k miles. They were forced to drain and refill the fluid to replace the computer, so I didnt have to have to pay to get it done.

OP, Have you driven a GTI yet?

$15k sport/lux and no mention of G35 Coupe?

Simple proper FR layout, cheap maintenance. Overall very solid car.
