I'd never been to Key West, but was able to cash in some hotel points and get a decent flight last week. I took my family and it turned out to be a great trip. We went down Duvall, but didn't stay out late. I wanted to do the Fort Jefferson Tour, but didn't book in time since this trip wasn't planned that long. Hopefully we go back and get a chance to check it out.

I ended up going fishing and had a good time pulling in quite a few fish with my son. Overall, it was a great week while it was cold back home.

Key West is definitely worth visiting at least once, it's one of those "unique" places in the US.

Fort Jefferson was interesting, but once you have seen one fort, you have seen them all. The only thing different with this Fort was it had a saltwater moat.

Key West is cool but I much prefer to stay in the middle/lower keys. Our favorite spot to stay is Marathon. We will drive down to Key West for an evening sometimes but that's it. I've stayed there before with just my wife and it was a great time. But there aren't really any nice beaches there at all. I mean I know the Keys aren't known for nice beaches, but the area we stay in has some really nice beaches which is part of the reason we like it there more.

As much as you love flying, I would have highly recommended taking the sea plane tour to Dry Tortuga. It is pricey especially if you have a family, but it is a once in a lifetime thing I will never forget. We did the afternoon tour and arrived right when the last boat with 100 or so people was leaving, so we had the whole island to just our plane which was like 8 people, and there were a couple campers there too. It was really cool.

EDIT:

Just now realizing that it's Fort Jefferson on Dry Tortuga. Yeah that is a really cool experience. Definitely do it via seaplane next time you're down there, and I'd recommend afternoon trip so you have the island to yourself.

EDIT 2:

Forgot I had this on Youtube from a long time ago. This was in 2013. This is about how high you fly the entire time too so you can see shipwrecks and sea life while flying. I also sat in the co-pilot seat on the way there and he let me steer for like a minute which was cool. I couldn't believe how smooth the landing was.

agreed, i really liked the seaplane flight out to the dry tortugas. way quicker than the boat and gave a great view. plus, no seasickness

it was 300$ a person back then though, so i don't even want to know what it costs nowadays

Yeah when I did it in 2013, it was $280 for half day or $495 for full day. I just found the email I have with the prices.

It is now $397 for half day and $697 for full day.

I honestly wouldn't recommend a full day though I think it would be too much time there. I didn't feel rushed at all while I was there for the half day.

not bad! i figured it would be double what i paid years before COVID hit.

agreed, a half-day was all i did and it seemed just the right length. plenty of time to walk around to see everything, and try a little snorkeling.
