need to get set up with one of these 2 services for laptop use. atm the sprint is $60/mo and cingular is $60-99/mo both unlimited.

what are your feelings with each of these as far as coverage and speed? also what about indoors? anybody compare them both?

Verizon FTW. I pay $40/month for coverage nearly everywhere in the USA at great speeds. If u live in a Cingular area where their is HSDPA coverage I'd probably go with it, it's got better speeds than Verizon.

With my verizon phoen I get about 200kbps up, and 400kbps average.

With my friends Sprint Evdo phone + bluetooth teethering setup, he was averaging about 550kbps down and 200kbps up.

I believe HSDPA is 3.5G.

regardless, HSDPA is only in about 40 markets last I heard, where as sprint and verizon are reachign 200 markets with EV-DO.

That and edge sucks.

Oh, and depending on your phone you can get itnernational coverage as well. I know my Q works in europe (gprs)...probably costs a fistful per minute though...through Vodaphone iirc

Sure, but it's fine for people that stay in metro areas. Just ran a speedtest and I'm getting just under 1mbps.

Verizon EVDO is best for coverage, and Sprint EVDO is currently best for speed (Rev A coming online in some markets now.) HSDPA sucks in North America.

EVDO > EDGE

evdo is significantly faster (3g) versus the older 2.5G edge. For the price I cannot beat my cell plan - 500 text, unlimited evdo and 400 anytime mins for 30/mo. I've teathered my cell for about 3 months after college graduation (too cheap for comcast...) and sprint never complained.

wait a second, this thread inspired me to finally hook up my LG CU500 via bluetooth..I am near downtown Atlanta, and I just got exactly 550 down, 347 up on the speakeasy test

this on the 3G HSPDA of course..3G is in the cities that I frequent, with the exception of College Station (I would guess it would be there relatively soon, given its small size and proximity to Houston), so I'm happy

Are you kidding me?

I hit ~560/210 at 12 bucks a month unlimited. If you want to toss a crap-ton of money out the window, go Verizon. If you want awesome spead and low cost, go Sprint.

If you travel internationally you have to go with EDGE/HSDPA since the US is the only country with EVDO

thanks for the info. also wanted to note that this will be a pc card only and will be getting the unlimited plan. we currently have cingular for our cells and that will stay the same and we don't travel, so it will be used in metro area 95% of the time.

from the maps i have seen i am covered pretty good either way in the city but sprint excels should we leave the city. also, i am only able to find a $99/mo price for faster unlimited cingular service and $60/mo for sprint. can anybody find a lower price for cingular?

Cingular is $60/month, view 'LaptopConnect Card or Tethered Device' and then 'Data Connect' - unlimited

link

does this include the 3g portion? or is that part of all if you are in one of the markets that support 3g?

3G works automatically if you're in a market that supports it.
