Rumors at the International Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas indicated the big news could be a CDMA- or WiMax-ready iPhone from Sprint or perhaps a joint announcement with Hewlett Packard of a WebOS tablet or smartphone.

Master illusionist David Blaine will be part of the evening event; the invitation says Sprint and Blaine will "show you that the impossible is possible."

------

I am going to go out on a limb and say that article is 100% wrong, as no iPhone or WebOS or Tablet will be an "industry first."

Now what would be an industry first is an HTC 3D Ready superphone, mentioned a month ago on a few websites. (http://www.dialtosave.co.uk/mobile/news/2010/12/01/htc-to-release-3d-android-handset-in-2011/)

I am so happy I didn't bite on a new phone earlier this week. I can hold on to my HTC Hero for a few more weeks. It's funny that Sprint is scheduling this only a few days before people could pre-order an iPhone from Verizon.

Viva la Sprint!

What in the hell am I going to do with a 3D cell phone? We hardly have 3D content for TV's, no less phones. It's not to be anything webos with HP's event a couple days later. My guess is a 4G WP7 device. This is Sprint's final shot with me and I'm gone. I need to be impressed, and I'm not waiting for CTIA to see it.

Maybe a dual core phone that comes out before the Optimus 2X? There`s nothing else I could think of other than maybe a tablet of some sort but I'm 99% sure it`s a phone since they didn't have anything @ CES except for the Sprint version of the G2. Maybe Evo 2.

lets hope it has something to do with data plan pricing and not bending over each customer everytime you send them the bill...

Bending over how? Sprint has one of the more reasonable data/voice pricing IMO. (For as long as they stay unlimited at least.)

Well, the way I look at it is - if it's 3D, it's got to have some major hardware attached to it, and I am sure the display will be top notch. After you get rid of the 3D features, you'll probably end up with a very capable phone that is pretty fast.

I really hope it's a phone. I don't feel like waiting for a new phone for much longer, and an iPhone would fill that void nicely.

I'm thinking something to do with network enhancements *and phones to utilize it* (dual core?).

CES phone exhibits seemed to be all about 4G this year, yet the company to bring the first "4G" network to the states doesn't bring anything major to the table. With the other carriers right on their coattails, sprints got to take it up a notch this year. I'd say they have something up their sleeves.

Lets see...

1) Introduction to market WiMax 2 (the 100+MB/s stuff) build out in 2011. Incorporate 20Mhz channels (doubling what the other companies are implementing) allowing for faster downloads and more throughput.

2) LTE & WiMax co-operate on same sprint & clear towers (this is something they've been suggesting going back to when everyone was saying wimax will die out and LTE will be dominant). Big $$ savings, and easier deployment.

3) Sprint to utilize some of the 800MHz spectrum currently dedicated to the iDEN network (nextel) for LTE/Wimax (2?) while simultaneously using the 1900/2500 spectrum bands. They are supposed to be phasing out the iDEN network by 2013, so at that point they will surely use it. From what I've read elsewhere, nextel is now under utilizing that spectrum band because of customer loss. It's an important spectrum because it penetrates buildings better than what they are currently using for Wimax (2.5Ghz); conversely the 2.5Ghz spectrum allows for higher data throughput. So, utilizing both (or really all three) bands would give sprint the best of both worlds.

4) A combination of 1 & 2 & 3 for something really fast and robust.

P.S.: Please sprint, don't tell us about these upgrades, then not give us a phone to use it with. USB dongles and modems, blah....

It's the HTC Glasses-Free 3D phone, which was already rumored for a Feb announcement.

Source:
http://3dradar.techradar.com/3d-tech/htc-aiming-be-first-3d-android-phone-01-12-2010

HTC had already been showing 3D prototypes behind closed doors last year at MWC 2010.

If they release it early enough, I might get it instead of the 3DS, and save up for the PS3-gfx PSP2.... MK9 will be a launch title, 'nuff said.

Sounding more and more it might be this. I've read many reports now from different sources it might be this.

damn it.. i thought it was the blackberry playbook. I asked blackberry reps at CES and they said that the only carrier that has been "seriously" planning the playbook's launch is sprint. Other than that, they're gonna release a wi-fi only playbook.

When's the direct replacement for the EVO on Sprint coming out? About the only things I'd say the EVO needs is a higher pixel density screen and a faster CPU/GPU. I wouldn't give up the EVO for a phone that didn't have both those things. I also don't want a physical keyboard ever again.

I'd like to see a 3D phone, but i think this whole 3D thing is a fad. I'm aiming for a new HP Webos device. If nothing comes from both Sprint and HP events for a new phone on Sprint, i'm going to have some major upgrade decisions.

If it were really something useful, ie., the rollover of unused minutes or GB, it would get my attention. 3D is a silly gimmick. I looked at a 60-in Sony HDTV w/glasses the other day - very underwhelmed. Been there, done that back in the 60s with 3D movies. Remember "Smell-o-Vision?"

HP will be announcing their new WebOS tablets just two days later. Well, not quite announcing, but "differentiating" between a WebOS tablet and iPad.

How could you differentiate something that hasn't been announced?

Don't take our word for it. HP senior Personal Systems staffer Todd Bradley told US TV channel CNBC last night that he'll talk about differentiating HP's offerings from Apple's iPad "on the ninth", Pre Central reports.

http://www.reghardware.com/2011/01/13/hp_webos_february_2011_announcement/

I am going to be sorely disappointed if this is what is going to be announced. Do we need yet another tablet to hit the market? It seems a million have been announced, but not nearly 1% have actually shipped.

a wimax iphone would be an industry first and would definitely be a huge announcement. but if they were going to do that they probably would have gone ahead and announced an lte iphone with verizon as well. its probably just a dual core 4g android phone

Maybe they're announcing that they're never going to tiered data plans... that would be a first.
