For those who just sign up with Sprint, if you have friends who are existing customer, don't forget to get the $10 referral credit. Both you and your friend will get $10 off after you stay with Sprint for 30 days.

Press #10 or (*10??)

No need to go to some private web referral site and give them the free $10, keep it to your friends and family.

Huey:

There is absolutely 100% no doubt BS in your post. Noone that uses a digital Sprint phone in LA proper has good coverage. Where exactly do you live and work? I can tell you where I have difficulty:

Beverly Hills
Santa Monica
Westwood (UCLA)
West Hollywood
Hollywood
La Cienega corridor

I will concede that it works well on elevated highways such as the 405 and the 10 but I don't spend my life on those like most LAers do.

Why don't you concede that Sprint is not all peaches and cream. The one-sidedness of your post makes you appear to be either biased or pathalogical in your devotion.

Do tell.

So do these new offers allow a free option like wireless web too? I didn't see any details on that at their website. Either way it sounds like a pretty good deal.

scoob89:

The wireless web can be added to any of the new plans for FREE over the next 6-months. This means that whatever your plan total is, you can use it for either voice calls or data i.e. the web or data transfer with the optional connectivity kits.

If you like using the web on your phone, it is possible to have it added at no extra charge. All these new plans require the 1-Year Advantage Agreement. That means that the new plans already have something built into them, like offpeak minutes and/or Long Distance, which is what is already being waived at no additional cost. Substituting one of those with the web is possible, if you want. Hope this helps.

How updated is the site that shows Sprint tower locations? According that the site, the nearest tower to my place is about 4 miles away. I get perfect reception (full bars) so does that sound reasonable? I have no idea what the range is for cell towers.

That is an interesting webpage. Some sites even have pictures of the tower and enclosure.

BTW, for those existing customer who want this deal, yes, you can switch your service plan to get it. All you need to do is go through tthe voice prompt in the automatic system. Pretty quick and simple, no need to hold for half hour for a live representative. The change will become effective next billing cycle.

A couple waring, one of them was previously posted by others, that you'll lose 1st incoming free minute if you have them.

Second is though they said the change will become effective next cycle, practically, it's a day before the cycle begins, i.e. the very last day of your current billing cycle will have the new plan, since it's 1 day only, Sprint will credit your old plan, and charge you the new plan for that 1 day, of course prorated all teh miutes also.

So, if you have a couple hours unused minutes that you want to use, don't use them on the last day as you'll get billed for overage.

Well, today I success fully switched my plan over from a $50 plan for 500 minutes to the new $35 for 1250 mintues. I even talked the customer service rep into giving me the 6 months free of wireless web which he claimed was only available for those who ordered their plans online, but with a little coaxing, he gave it to me...

Oh, one interesting tidbit, I was made to pay back $50 that I got taken off the price of my phone when I first got a sprint plan because I signed up under the service agreement, not the advantage agreement, so it is costing me an extra $50 for this deal, but I'll definitely make up this lost money in the amount i will save over the next year...
$15 x 12 (months) = $180 - $50 (return of the service agreement money) = $130! With a gain of 750 anywhere minutes a month!

Just though I'd share my experience with them, so far my experience with sprint's customer service hqas been a pleasant one

Thanks feb for giving me heads up on that new pricing change, it is saving me a bundle!

THEY MADE YOU GIVE BACK MONEY?? wow thats a new one! Sprint coverage is VERY spotty on the SF peninsula, in the city proper it works fine...

...ive had the Samsung SCH 1000 (their first phone in this market) for over 2 years and 0 problems with the phone (except when I got it wet and they replaced it for free and i didnt even have a service warranty contract!) they even let me keep the battery so i have 2! but i have had billing issues and many dropped calls..cellular one (now AT&T) verizon and pac bell ALL seem to have more reliable coverage in the bay area...

where can i get cheap sprintpcs phones in the bay area? i'd like to get the samsung sch-8500 or the Motorola Timeport P8167.

it says that you have to sign up for their sprint advantage agreement for one year. i live in the dorms at berkeley, can i sign up for a different long distance service provider? Do they charge you a monthly fee for being in the sprint advangtage program or do they just offer you lower long distance rates and waive the fee because you are part of their sprintpcs network?

Sprint Phones:

(my experience in L.A. as a sprint customer for 2 years and many)

Startac Single Band:
Excellent Reception. Pretty old school since it has absolutely no bells and whistles. No WW (wireless web. big deal that crap sucks)

Startac Dual Band:
Okay reception. But the single band had a signal many times that the dual band did not.

Samsung 3500:
Peice of crap. Feature rich but shoddily made.

Samsung 6100:
TINY! Single band, feature rich (voice dial, useless calender and useless calculator, etc...). This is what i currently use. eGay always has tons for $75.00

Now as for buying at bestbuy or anyware with an extended warranty. I got one on my first touchpoint which i abused. If you bust it (without having evidence of physical damage)they will replace it for free. If the model is no longer available they will give you a credit for the amount you paid ($249 which i used to get a startac). For $60 its not a bad deal but many will oppose...

have to defend the SCH-3500. I've been using one since the week they came out, as have several of my colleagues, and we haven't had any problems. This is my third PCS phone, and it is by far the most durable and has the best reception of any of them, not to mention the battery life which is fantastic. You can get a full charge into the phone at no time, and it lasts at least twice as long as my StarTac did.

Just had to defend the poor 3500!

Tips for New Customers in dealing with sprint:

Again, 2 years of experience with these bastards. Theyre a good product (in L.A.)but their CS and greed is absolutely pukeable.

Activation Fee:
If its your first time then your out of luck. Unless you bought it from Radioshack. Fineprint in most radioshack ads say free activation which you can hold sprint to. If its an upgrade or replacement there is no reason for them to charge $30 for pressing buttons. They make money on the phone you just spent $299 for so theyre being greedy. Let them know you are not upgrading but "replacing" your (ahem.."defective&quot phone. An experienced CS will waive the fee.

Billing Mistakes (be warned... it WILL happen...)
Talk to CS right away and BE NICE (or they will hang up on you. trust me). They will "look into it". Call again and check status. If they dont fix it (which they wont) then escalate to supervisor and get the address or fax for their billing department and the name of a billing contact so you will work with someone directly. If you dont do it this way then you will end up working with 10 rookie CS agents who will keep adjusting your account improperly. A billing agent will take your fax/mail and adjust it within a week and save you tons of time on hold.

Wrong Numbers
If it effects your minutes that much and you have time to complain then they will reimburse minutes for wrong numbers (just like your long distance provider does).

Sprint Store
Dont buy from the online sprint store. Shipping is a bastard and returns are very lengthy. Bestbuy, Frys, Circuit City usually have promos giving you free crap like $30 gift cards, headphones, etc...

(I hope this wasnt off topic)Im sure other experienced customers could add to the list but this is actually pretty important when dealing with these big companies that are growing faster then they can support. Sprint is known for hiring uneducated, disgruntled CS guys (And supervisors!)that just read the script in front of them when you call. But remember that 1 out of 4 of these CS reps are actually nice and helpful people so if you got a jerk CS then call back until you get someone that could help.

Emonkey,

Excellnt advice. especially the "replacing a defective phone" is very helpful.

Thanks!

If anyone have more insight on the service/warranty plan that Best Buy / Circuit City offer, we'd like to hear them.

My experience with Staples extended service is horrible. Took our office assistant 1 month with numerous phone calls & FAX to get the service on a copying machine as Staples & the service contract companies were evasive in providing the service. That's why I don't trust any extend warranty service.

Best Buy / Circuit city that offer replacement or full credit of the phone seems too good to be true. I believe I'm that type of person who will change to a newer phone every year .... if it doesn't cost me much to make the switch.

So how's your experience in getting a newer phone while your old phone is working? Imagine switching from Samsung 1000 to Samsung 3500 to LG Touchpoint 1100 (all listed $149.99) for free ...

When I went through the process to buy phone and the service plan, I saw I would get $50+30 rebate. Then I checked back with same phone and plan, I couldn't find the offer again, and I tried several times with no avail. So I called them, and mention the offer, they confirmed the deal.
But I'm still not sure the deal is only applying when you order through online.
And you can get $50 gift certificate from Staples when you buy Samsung 3500 or 8500(some of other brands, too) with service.
