I saw the rebate offer in the B&M ad circular which came out in last Sunday's newspaper ( wireless phone section top of page) circular which expires today ! 6-09-01 - I don't know what the sitiuation would be with ordering online but it would be interestion to see if it could be combined with coupone codes or free T/V offer.

SmarTpants,

Actually the Voicestream plans that include 2000 bonus minutes are for weekends only. Voicestream does not have night minutes.

Anyone here have Sprint in New York city (specifically manhattan)?

Is it any good or is there a better carrier? I was hoping cingular covered NYC (due to their unlimited nights and weekends) but apparently they dont!

Thanks

I'm very satisfied with sprint's service but their customer service is another story. I had it for 5months now, no drop calls and reception all over sf bayarea is very good in my opinion. I'm use Motorola timeport, it seems like the best phone to use for sprint service co'z I don't get any drop calls and signal is pretty good too.

researcheverything: do u still get the 1st minute incoming call for free until now?

thanks.

researcheverything gets first incoming minutes free because he started w/sprint more than a year ago when it was offered and never changed his plan. Once you change plans then you lose that First minute thing. But with the tons and tons of minutes they give you now for pretty cheap then I chose to go for my 1500min/$50 plan w no First minute.

Im in Socal and i have okay service, but im definitely not happy with sprint. Ive been screwed on my bill too much, wireless web never connects, no SMS, CS sucks and no nokia. I am really thinking of cingular when i dump sprint in Dec (contract ends).

anyone recommend cingular? I hear they use SMS. Hopefully it is as good as it is in europe and asia (where cellphones are called a "handy&quot. Why the heck are they so far ahead of us?

For those of you in the Bay Area, dont even think about getting Sprint. It drops almost every call and I always got a very low signal. Used it for about 2 weeks before changing.

Cingular here is alright. Not as bad as Sprint but there are always busy signals around 8PM. Its because everyone wants to use the nighttime minutes which start at 8.

Verizon is decent, but the best by far is ATT. A bit more expensive but perfect reception, all the time. Strong signal in most places, even in buildings where Cingular/Sprint get no reception at all.

Hope that helps for the Bay Area people looking for a new phone.

don't get Cingular!!! its the former Cellular One.. they have terrible phone service, and terrible customer support! They did a nice job of revamping their image though with that logo.

OK my friend's use PCS in Austin and coverage is good there. My friends in Houston with PCS get a lot of dropped calls. My friend's in Austin who come down to Houston agree on this. Today in Houston, I couldn't find a PCS phone that worked. I called a PCS phone and got "all circuits busy" or "PCS phones down to flood in Houston." My friend's only had analog roam with PCS in Houston today.

Now my sister has Voicestream. In southwest Houston, Voicestream coverage is pretty bad. I get 0 bars inside my house and 1 bar outside. Voice quaility isn't too great too. Now this I don't get: when I leave Houston, the voicestream phone says "ROAMING" the whole time. I choose automatic service selection and it obviously shows VOICESTREAM but still says ROAMING. Ditching this plan soon. I think I will get AT&T.

actually, the reason why it seems like our phones in the US are way behind compared to phones in asia and europe, is because marketing research tells those companies that big phones like those old nokias sold SO well. So lots of companies tried that same tactic. But i think you can see that the phones are changing, and there'll be more small 'clam-shell' type phones out there soon.

I researched like a madman before getting my phone a few months ago. I'm 100% convinced that Verizon is the best bet in just about any aspect you care to talk about.

phatstuff. i heard about that big phones (and other gadgets) sold better here somewhere before. I know that in japan the DV camcorders are those small rectangular ones but they didnt sell well in america until they made them look like our traditional boxy style. Pretty stupid to me cause i like those japanese DV camcorders much better. And i also heard the similar story with the cellphones in the U.S. I dont know who does those surveys but they got it wrong. Everyone seems to love those new tiny nokias.

emonkey: Sprint 1500min/$50 plan -- is that your peak mins with free long distance?

thanks. In a couple days I'll sign up for sprint 400 mins peak/ 1600 offpeak for $49.99 with free long distance, voicemail, web, callerid etc. Is there anything better? I want something with free long distance.

<< Why the hell wont sprint use nokia? Ive been wanting to replace my POS 6100 for months but nothing is coming down the line. >>

<< Yeah, SprintPCS' refusal to use Nokia phones is really annoying (I too want to upgrade my Nokia 6185). I've complained to them about it multiple times and answers range from "we're working on it" to "thanks for telling us about this." The Nokia reps I've talked to have said Sprint has specifically refused to carry Nokia phones. They're the only service provider I can think of that does not carry phones made from the largest (and arguably best) cell phone manufacturer in the world. Stupid. . . . >>

The reason Sprint no longer uses Nokia phones is because when they offered them, those customers that had them complained alot more about the service than those with other phones. Dropped calls & slippery signals & things along that line. I haggled a Sprint rep that came to my store (I work @ Office Depot) and he told me this information, as well as someone that works at the Sprint store (after I switched to my Samsung 8500). I love Nokia phones and I still have my 6185 in case for whatever reason my 8500 fails (but I'm willing to sell!). The Sprint rep at the store ran these tests on my Nokia and said it wouldn't complete many of the signal tests; the connections were slippery.

I hope this answers every1's question about "Why Sprint won't use Nokia". I hope that they decide to use Nokia's 3285 phone, a CDMA phone that could be used on Sprint, but it all depends on how it performs. They're constantly testing Nokias...I guess they're not up to par with the rest of their phones.

Also, I'm not sure if any1 read the article about a month back about CDMA carriers upgrading their networks later this year, but apparently once the upgrade takes place, every1 with a Nokia phone purchased earlier than about 2 months ago will have to come in for a software update for the phone. (I haven't checked the status of this recently.) Verizon considered dropping Nokias altogether b/c of that, but I guess they worked it out since they still offer them.

In that same article, they said Nokia's good with GSM (i.e. VoiceStream) phones and even TDMA (AT&T, BellSouth) phones, but CDMA was never their thing.

Wow that was a long post....

Also, FWIW, remember Sprint Spectrum? That's now called VoiceStream.

Bevo, while it is true that Iridium did declare bankruptcy, they actually did find a buyer for the company at the very last moment.

As a result, the buyer was able to get more than 5 BILLION dollars worth of Iridium's assets for only 25 million!!! Talk about a HOT DEAL!

No Iridium satellites were de-orbited, and the "new" Iridium service isn't burdened by trying to recoup the 5 billion investment of putting the satellites in orbit in the first place.

The service still isn't economical for urban users, but if you are constantly traveling in remote areas without cell towers, $1.50 per minute can be a real bargain.

Actually Cingular is not Cell-One. Cingular is PacBell and a bunch of other companies. ATT is Cell-One and they have great service.

I am surprised to hear that people don't like Sprint service in the bay area. i had service from 1997-1999 in the bay area on a sony z-phone. My dropped calls happened in specific places only. 1st, on the 101 heading south to palo alto..that apparently has been corrected. The second spot was one particular place on the bay bridge. And lastly, on the way to San Rafael after crossing the golden gate. It worked pretty much everywhere else where there were people around and I am sure it has improved since then.

I just switched my plan, and specifically asked about the $10 fee as my friend had also mentioned it, and the representative told me that they do NOT charge $10 extra.

It had best be true or bye bye sprint.

I wish there were some way to get through to them that their $35 activation fee policy is horrible, awful, and probably quite bad for their business.

Thanks for the heads up, Thai

About that $10 thing, it's actually $10 a month charge (for the nights/weekend "option&quot when you do not sign up with the 1-year Advantage Agreement. It kinda sucks, but since i've had my # for such a long time, I don't want to bother changing it. :frown:

My friend had told me that it was only for people who had a one year service agreement...

Ahh... and this is a different charge, phatstuff... sprint actually places the $10 charge on my bills, but then gives a $10 coupon with these promotional plans. Ie... the price for me has been $50 + $10 for 1500 minutes - $10 coupon promotion each month.

This $10 that I'd heard about was a new charge just for having switched plans... maybe my friend had just mistaken that $10 n/w charge as you're talking about.

In any case, it's good to hear confirmation that I will not be charged $10 extra a month
