How does the A500 compare to the Sanyo 4900 reception wise? Also looking at todays Best Buy insert, they have a sale on all sprint phones, A500 has a 75 instant savings, it does not say anywhere if it is just for new activations or for all customers like it usually does. Also I have heard that on Nov 1, Sprint will be offering savings on phones to all new and existing customers for the holidays, can anyone confirm this?

Open the box.
Take out the flyer,
call the 1800 number for the promotion.
Give them your ESN-hex number.
write down your order number.
and wait for 3~5 days.

GregFish:
Sanyo 4900 beats A500 in every catagory!!!!! Just one little things..it is kinda HUGE!

I have had a chance to use all the phones for a while.
While the A400 usually gets more bars than the A500 and the A460, the reception might not be better. I spoke to a rep about this and they said that the A400 gives less accurate readings about reception. As for the A460, it SUX!

the A460 gets hot after 5 - 10 mins of chatter. I mean really really hot. Its also suprisingly bulky and ugly.

The A500 gets hot as well, but it takes longer and the heat is alot less intense. The size of the phone is great. Everything about this phone is great except for the need for the free extended battery that they will give you. The regular battery does not last very long, not a suprise I guess since it is color.

The A460 is a terrible phone. I would take the A400 over it any day. The A400 is very compact, light and solidly built. No problems with heat at all!!

my 2 cents

Yea that was pretty easy.. i just logged onto the Samsung Battery offer website and it took me 2 minutes to fill in my info .. and add the free extra battery to my shopping cart. cool!

Does anyone know wher to order the attachment that let's you connect your A500 to your laptop and surf the web? Are the charges the same for this? Just like using pcs vision on the phone?

I was thinking about getting the A500, but I have been so happy with my A400 that I might just stay with it. I went through every single phone SprintPCS had available (thanks Best Buy replacement plan!) with unsatisfactory results. That is, until I got to the A400. The signal receptions is by far better than any other phone SprintPCS had out at the time. And when I see people on here saying that the A500's reception isn't as good as the 400's I worry about that. If only the A400 had a color screen it would be the perfect phone!

I just recently bought a A460 because it was on sale at bestbuy. I can testify that holding my old SCH-8500 right next to my A460, that the SCH-8500 had more bars than the A460. HOWEVER, even with only 1 bar on my A460, I have not noticed problems with conversation over the phone. I have only had the phone for about a week so far, so if suddenly decide I hate this phone, I'll post an update.

Under version, my phone says:

SPR DBTM:10015
S:ES.A460 VD26
H:A460.04

I believe the current version number is 10015. The reason you need the updates is because when they put up new towers, you need the new software to be able to use them.

Just a few comments on the Sprint PCS Vision service..
I got the Samsung A500 phone from CostCo (best deal IMHO).. and I was able to activate my phone without too much trouble (I only had to wait 5 hours and talk to 3 sprint reps to do it).

The phone itself has a few cool games bundled with it:
Sega's Monkey Ball -- this is the best game
Space Invaders -- this game was ok.. true to the classic
Some racing game -- this game blows

Of course, the main reason I got the phone was to surf the web! So, I didn't waste any time getting to the Sprint PCS homepage (from my home PC) to activate my Vision account. This was all pretty easy.. and I was soon able to login to the web via the A500.

But, I was not impressed with the web content AT ALL! I think sprint jumped the gun on the release of their service. They don't really have much to offer once you get online. Well, I take that back.. they have a crap load of screensavers and ringers and games you can download.. but most of them are from $1.00-$4.00 each and they EXPIRE after a while so you have to re-download them! How lame! Some of them are free.. but not that many. Also, I was expecting to surf the web as I would on a PC - nope.. The web surfing is limited.. not all sites work.. but it is better than the WAP 1.0 phone browsers.. although since those sites have been around longer the content is organized a whole lot better.

Needless to say I was kind of dissapointed.. and I was thinking about returning the phone. Then, I came across some VERY cool websites were you can download all sorts of stuff.. games, J2ME apps, ringers, wallpapers.. etc. etc..

http://www.a500hacking.com/
http://pcspix.com/index.html
http://www.matrixm.com/
http://midlet.org/jsp/index.jsp
http://beiks.net
http://www.tagtag.com/visiondir <-- go there with the phone (better homepage than sprint's)

Anyway, after checking out some of these sites.. I downloaded a full-fledge html capable web browser app that runs on the phone and now i can surf the web and go to almost any site. The only problem now is tha you run outof space on the phone pretty quickly.. even going to some basic web pages.. there just isn't enough memory to hold a full web page and it's pictures.

I guess I may have had some high expectations about the new sprint vision service. But, I blame it on Sprint because they have been hyping it up a lot Eventhough I was kind of let down initially.. I think I am going to stick with this service because there are a lot third party sites developing for it and I think the speed is pretty good on the web access. Also, once I get the usb connectivity kit I can use it with my laptop (in theory).

Hope my ramblings helped some people decide if they want this or not. It's definitely the coolest phone/service you can get right now.

No Staples in my immediate area, (about a 2 hour drive). So I went to Best Buy and got it for 224.99 + tax. Does BB pm to Staples on cell phones? Maybe I can save another 25-30.. Anyways then I went to activate it at the Sprint Store. Before walking in I called Cust Retention, told them straight up, I bought the A400 and 2 weeks later the a460 was out and that I was pissed. Was there anything they could do to help me on a new phone purchase, jabber for a few minutes, she offeres me $50 dollar service credit. Then I'm about to hang up and she says something about hooking up the month's service, so I ask her if she will and she gives me a months credit too. So anyways long story short, I went and activated my phone instantly, 224+tax-50-39.99-75(selling a400 on ebay) = good price.

FYI, if you don't want to sign up for a vision plan, sign up for wireless web (free first 3 months) then use those sites above to get ringers and crap.

TIMEKEEPER: Two questions if you have a sec:

(1) the belt holster: do they just hand it to you with the car charger and earbud? I was at my Costco tonight and the "Exclusively for Costco Members" card that was on the stand didn't mention that. It did say $35 service credit, free 12 months Voice Command, free car adapter and earbud.

(2) the A460: did the display say $79? Or does it just ring up that way? Once again, at my Costco, the display said $119.

I know I could just buy them and return them if I don't like the way it rings up, but I'm waiting until Nov 2 to see if any of the rumored price drops come to pass.

An added note, which may only be for Costco. There's a $50 rebate card there for 1 phone, $200 for 2 phones on non-Vision phones (i.e., the A460). Good for new and existing customers adding a new line. Has to be purchased by Nov 2, activated by Nov 16. (The card doesn't say Costco anywhere, but I didn't see it in the Sprint store when I was there earlier today.)

for (1), I think the kit is included in the box. The box itself says "Free Car Charger and Earbud included" or something like that.
I went to Costco today to go buy it...but I forgot they don't take Visa...

Just a few questions about the A460.

Its 79 (+ tax out) out the door?

ANd how bad is the reception on this? Bad as in the A460 would drop calls and get patchy reception. Or bad as in, the other phones are showing more signal bars, ( really hoping for that one <---)

How would the signal compare to that of an old samsung sch 3500 ( two years old, still going but just barely).

My A460 sounds just fine even with the 1-2 signal bars that I get in my home. The thing still gets data, rings, etc with 0 bars. I think the threshhold is just tuned different on the A460 and wish people would stop counting bars. I've yet to drop a call in the 2 months I've owned it... though I must admit that I don't use it while in a moving car or anything that would move me into non-service areas.

A460 in Mountain View, Ca is $119. Had them confirm the price at the register.

No $79 for you, California noodlehead.
