Sprint Smartphone Upgrade

I've got an HTC Touch Pro 2 on SERO which was my first smartphone. Had to get a refurb when the screen quit and its gotten very crashy and my external audio has gone in and out(ringtone, plugging in headphones for pandora etc). I've been counting down to my upgrade in October(when I got the phone) but looking at the Sprint site I'm going to be eligible for a new one in 4 days.

It looks like I'm going to be stuck paying another $10 /mo for a new smartphone and possibly another $10 to go with 4g. It looks like there are 2 Clear towers in town now but going to check coverage at the sprint store later. I mostly rely on the smartphone features for a wireless hotspot(which I can get under the radar on the TP2), internet browsing and Pandora streaming. Not much on games/apps but might change with exposure.

Looks like the Evo and Epic are the strong contenders, not sure that 3d is going to be worthwhile, any phones on the horizon or should I just escape my dying phone asap and grab one of these. I'm not sure how useful the 4g will be now, but will have the phone for 2 years and hoping its runnign nicer as time goes on.

There really aren't many phones on the horizon for Sprint, just the Samsung galaxy s2. As for 4G who knows how good ur reception will be, sprints 4G isn't the best. HTC phones usually have bad battery life relative to other phone makers. Any of these phones will work just fine:

Evo 4G
Evo 3d
Evo shift
Epic
Within (gs2 phone should be here by October) just went through fcc
Nexus s

I would wait for the SGS2. Unless you can get a evo g1 for free from sprint. The evo 3d imho is really not worth it. I have played with one and did not find it that impressive over my evo 1. I would love to see the screen on SGS2, that could be a significant improvement. Good luck with everything. It killed me too when I finally had to get off windows mobile to get a decent phone experience.

I have the the evo 3d and while it might not be a huge leap from the first one, it would be for the op. I came from the original touch pro.

Right now your best options are the Evo 3D and the Moto Photon. Compared to the Evo 4G and the Epic, they both have faster dual-core CPUs, more RAM, and higher resolution screens. Rumor has the Within coming in August, but Sprint hasn't said anything about it officially yet (though it's obviously coming).

Looking at the Within rumors now. Got a little screwed last time around waiting for the Palm Pre to come out, it drug on for months and then found I couldn't get it on SERO anyway, shouldn't have that problem this time but don't want to be waiting months on end either.

What about the Photon 4G? That looks to be an awesome Sprint device minus the probability of the locked boot loader. >_<

It should be coming out very soon, and it's supposed to be one of their flagship devices.

would feel better about waiting for the within if it had it's own coming soon page. Rumors on sites are talking about it being released as early as this weekend, deja vu of my 6 month pre waiting debacle.

I upgraded from a SERO Touch Pro to the EVO 3D about a month ago, and have been totally satisfied. I'd originally considered waiting until the SGS2 was out, but decided that I'd had enough (the Touch Pro was giving me problems), and just went with the EVO 3D.

The 3D effect on the camera is fairly gimmicky, but it does work. I've also gotten a few decent 3D photos with it, but I don't mess with it all that much. The 3D wasn't the main draw for me, so nothing to really complain about there.

Having seen my cousin's SGS2, yeah, the screen is nice, but coming from the Touch Pro 1, pretty much any current higher-end smartphone is going to be a ridiculous jump in screen quality. The EVO 3D also feels like it's built much better than the Touch Pro to me. I'm sure a lot of that can be attributed to the lack of any sliding joint, and the giant screen.

Good to hear. I will probably try and zip by the sprint store this weekend and see what is currently available.

Photon or within the only two I would go with, preference strongly on the within.

It's not for everyone but Sprint has the Nexus S 4G. Honestly though wait for the Galaxy S II.

On the rumor front, there's the Epic 2 and the Hero 4G as well.

I too have the Evo 3D. The wife and I love ours. I cant say how it is compared to other smart phones since this is my first smart phone. I came over from ATT and we used just regular Samsung phones with no data or texting, etc., so its a huge jump up in tech and quality for us. Loving the unlimited data plan and hotspot capability. I can run my laptop off the phone's internet connection if I want. Which I do because my employer doesn't like us using the network at work for anything other than business. As one of my partners is always saying, 'The computer Nazis are always watching us'.

4G connection in my area is good (Tampa Bay area) and 4g is decently fast I think. Had the phones for about 10 days now and not a single dropped call. ATT dropped my calls at least once a day and often more than that. The only down side to Sprint, in my opinion, is that their plans are pricey if you want unlimited data for everything. The wife and I are now paying twice the monthly costs than previously but to be fair we are getting a whole lot more for it too.
