What are the main uses of a serrated and a plain knife edge? How do you choose which to get? Is it serrated looks cooler and straight edge has more uses? LOL

i believe serrated is for cutting stuff like boxes...and straight is not.

serrated will keep it's "sharpness" better than a straight edge.

i think that's the reason!

I find I prefer serrated blades over straight in all situations. (I guess except in the kitchen)

Serrated will be able to cut easier than a plain edge even when a bit duller, because there is more surface area per inch to cut. The down side is serrated is much more difficult to sharpen without proper equipment. I purchased all plain edge. I've had on of each in the past, and I preferred sharpening the plain edge. Serrated edges tear too much when not sharp.

I think the Meerkats are a good design, and will probably be worth more than the asking price. I just think there are much better designs for an everyday knife. I purchased the Herbst model also. The blade is VG-10 steel and the handle is almite coated aluminum. The handle feels much lighter than the blade. This makes the knife slightly off balance. For $107 I purchased 3 high quality knives, and I couldn't find the Japan verison of the Herbst model any cheaper than what all three cost. Great find, and I might wish I would have purchased more meerkats for the future. I'll put one through the ringer on some cardboard over the next several days.

EDIT: I don't know why the stealth close...I guess it's a gimic, but I like one handed operation much better. While it is possible to close this one-handed, it's difficult.
