Make sure to read what you may miss if you disable Messenger Service.

Lastly, check out http://www.doxdesk.com/parasite/, to see if your browser is infested with parasites.
Or, don't use IE.

Parasites infect other browsers as well, but you are right in that this script does only check IE.

But you would suggest not using IE, but leaving Messenger Service enabled? I much prefer the reverse.

Actually, I didn't suggest doing either. I was giving an alternate choice (not using IE), if you didn't want to worry as much about these things. Other browsers may be affected by some, but 99% people on here will agree that IE has 99% of them (the ole 99% rule ).
Also I didn't say one way or the other about messener service, just to do some reading to know what you're disabling, rather than just going by one person's suggestion.

Umm, I'd have to say that you are sorta right - I agree that IE has 99% of the ActiveX parasites, because it's the only one to support ActiveX. But there are plenty of other parasites and trojans that infect other browsers than IE. Most of the crap that gets in that way does not come in via IE anyway, but via the associated Outlook or Outlook Express. I never use either of these on any of my own machines, but again have to support L-users on them. So I know how to deal with OTDs (Outlook Transmitted Diseases) and such problem as well.

Now don't get me wrong, Microsloth's security blows chunks. But since I have to support it, and I use it on several of my machines, I instead know how to lock it down, close holes, eliminate the stuff that does get in, etc. But that does not mean that when supporting Netscape or Mozilla or Opera or whatever that I don't need to know how to deal with the issues involved with each of these. So the blanket statement "don't use IE" does not automatically make you safe from problems.

I agree w/ you, BTW...

More comments from anyone on Spyblocker vs Ad-Aware?

I have run both Ad-Aware and Spy-Bot on my sister's PC yet she is still getting a pop-up grey window every once in a while.

I tried to get rid of it with these programs but to no avail.

I also ran a complete virus check with VirusScan - nothing.

Any idea what else I can do for her.

Try disabling your Messenger service:
Administrative Tools > Component Services > Services > Messenger

Yo,

For these people with these grey window popups, its called "messenger spam" You dont even need to have any browser window for these darn things to popup. You can do the following instructions above in other posts or you can do the following:

Goto Start -> Run -> type "services.msc" -> Then go down to "Messenger" -> Then Stop that service

Really easy and it wont mess up your windows messenger or MSN messenger at all. In fact it has nothing to do with it. The Messenger service is something that allows administrators to send messeges over to clients using IPs. So if you aren't on a network or even use this as a form of communication, you really don't need this IMHO. Feel free to correct me if I am wrong.

Bump for another satisfied Spybot user.
Just read a "Shoot-out" about the spyware software.. and Spybot was the clear winner.

200 files found on my machine.. all of them cookies.. but nice to have something to delete them without losing my "good" cookies.

I also use spybot and ad aware....and i must agree, spybot is the clear winner. not only does it clean out the spyware, but also prevents it from coming back if I am not mistaken. both are free. IMHO...regards...rob
