http://spybot.safer-networking.de PC Magazine gave this very high ratings, especially considering you can download and use for free (donations are probably appreciated.) This is good, very easy to use software. The only thing it balked about removing from my system was the Cdilla stuff that snuck in with Turbo Tax. I decided not to remove this as I might want to access my return in the next month or so.

I've used SpyBot and AdAware and I think SpyBot is the clear winner. The Immunize feature in SpyBot 1.2 prevents most of the bad stuff from getting saved to my hard drive in the first place, which seems like a useful feature so far.

I use both the latest Ad-aware 6, as well as Spybot 1.2. Like 'em both, run 'em once every week or two to clean out the crap. Very good deals!

You may want to also visit http://www.grc.com, and check out the UnPNP and XPdite Windows patches to close a couple of other vunerabilities.

Lastly, check out http://www.doxdesk.com/parasite/, to see if your browser is infested with parasites.

You can customize what it scans for. And it doesn't automatically delete stuff. You can look through the list of "suspect" files and choose what you do and do not want deleted.

Try disabling your Messenger service:

Okay, here it goes.... I ran adaware, and if found nothing....
Just installed this software and.. :ause while I finish the install, update, and run it:: ...wow, it found 16 things that adaware missed.... but, as far as I can tell, most of those were just leftovers from adaware not completely deleting everything (ie uninstall files, empty directories)

Been using SEARCH & DESTROY for a long time and love it. I think Adware 6 is pretty sweet, but for some reason S&D seems to pick up the pieces that Adware misses. I have had zero spyware problems since using S&D. <3 <3! haha

Thanx... Not only does it find the baddies, it gives you info on them. I've been wondering for months why Save.exe, in my windows directory, was trying to access the internet (Thank goodness for Zone Alarm Pro). I never let it access the net, and never seemed to have any problems, but was scared to delete it cuz I didn't know what it was. Spybot found it, and told me all this nifty info:
Company: WhenU.com, Inc.
Product: SaveNow
Threat: AdWare

Company URL: http://www.whenu.com/
Company product URL: http://www.whenu.com/about_savenow.html
Company privacy URL: http://www.whenu.com/privacy.html

Functionality
SaveNow wants people in the US help shopping. It wants to give you additional (advertisement) information whenever you surf, e.g. use a search engine.

Description
Hiding data by misusing a structure in the registry reserved for other stuff doesn't help you trust a software. But anyway, who would use a software if he had to look up the current Privacy Policy every time?

Privacy Statement
The Internet is an evolving medium and WhenU.com may change its privacy policy from time to time. Please review the WhenU.com privacy policy often. Use of any WhenU.com product indicates your knowledge and acceptance of the privacy policy posted on the WhenU.com site and toolbar at that time.

Now I can get rid of it, and not worry. I'll definately be making a small donation.

Make sure to read what you may miss if you disable Messenger Service.

Or, don't use IE.

Parasites infect other browsers as well, but you are right in that this script does only check IE.

But you would suggest not using IE, but leaving Messenger Service enabled? I much prefer the reverse.
